For Labor Day weekend, David and I decided to hang around our house to catch up on our to-do lists, but we decided to take a little day trip to the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro, NC. A little known fact about David is that he loves a zoo. Any time we visit a new city, if they have a zoo, we go. This is all very much fair considering that I love to visit any historic site/house/area in new places. It had been a while since we went to the NC Zoo, and I agreed to go in hopes of seeing the new baby Rhinos and also to try a new fried chicken place at the zoo. Yes, I went to the zoo to try a new fried chicken place…
Our first stop when arriving was Billy D’s Fried Chicken. Y’all, I gotta tell ya. I’m impressed with the food choices at the zoo. Billy D’s is located near the Africa entrance, and at the North America entrance, there is a restaurant called the Iron Hen Cafe Express that we’ll be trying the next time we go back. David and I both ordered the hot fried chicken sandwich. It comes with waffle fries and there is a sauce bar that features comeback sauce, which is my favorite!
David has very specific animals that he looks forward to seeing, including the gorillas, wolves, and his underrated favorite (by his standards) of the polar bear. I brought my camera for our trip for him to be able to take photos to contribute to this post. Below are favorites from the day.
One of my favorite parts of the North Carolina Zoo is their conservation efforts. There are several educational components of the zoo, which I always enjoy! Learn more here.
We arrived by 12:45PM, ate lunch, and saw the majority of the park by 4:30. It’s important to note that the park closes at 5:00PM.
