One of my favorite local businesses is Fairview Garden Center, which has been family-owned and operated for 50 years. Fairview is our go-to during the seasons for styling our front porch, wreaths for the holiday season, and now, landscaping needs. David and I moved into our home in 2017 and have slowly been making updates to make our house a home that reflects our style and personality. One easy way to update curb appeal is through landscaping and our large front flower bed needed a little TLC. We had large evergreen shrubs that did a nice job filling up space, they also were rather diseased. We headed to Fairview Garden Center to pick some new plants to fill the space. Adding Curb Appeal – What We Planted
Our current landscaping set up for our large flower bed in front of our garage windows includes gardenias, various hydrangeas, and golden euonymus. This particular flower bed gets a lot of sun and because of the way our house is positioned on the lot, some smaller flowering trees we have attempted have sustained wind damage during storms. Knowing all of that, we reached out to Fairview Garden Center to think about plants that would be low maintenance and grow to fill the space. For more variegated shrub options for bringing color into your landscaping, these are some great options, including the golden euonymus we have in our flower bed.
For this, we opted for 4 Bobo hydrangeas. These are dwarf limelight hydrangeas that bloom throughout the spring, summer, and fall. We opted for the dwarf versions to keep them manageable for the area that we planted in and because they can handle a lot of sun. These hydrangeas can be pruned in winter or early spring and they bloom on new wood. Looking for other landscaping plants? For the far right corner, we opted for a Blue Steel Arizona Cypress. We already have one of these trees plants in an area that gets a lot of sun and it has done really great, so we thought this would be a nice tree to fill in the space of this large flower bed. We are also optimistic that it may end up providing some shade to some of our existing plants as it continues to grow. This tree is drought resistant once the roots are established, which made it an even better option for us. Adding Curb Appeal – Why Plant in the Fall
Soil temperatures during the fall are perfect for root growth, especially in our region. Roots are where plants store their energy, so the healthier the roots, the healthier the plant. By planting in the fall, this helps roots establish and store energy for use in the spring. This is also helpful because a larger root system can mean plants need little to no supplemental water. This is a huge added benefit for the summer, especially if and when we encounter prolonged dry spells. Spring is a time that people generally like to do landscaping, and there is nothing wrong with that. While the roots will still establish during the fall, plant energy is also spent on top growth.
