New York City is our favorite place to visit together, and we especially love visiting NYC in the winter. The holidays seem to sparkle brighter in the city and there is so much to do and see outside of the normal attractions. Wearing the right outfits can help you stay warm while also looking fabulous in the streets of New York, and can be versatile to transition from day to night if without needing a big outfit change. First and foremost, whenever David and I travel to NYC together, we do not have firm plans or reservations, so we definitely wing it around the city. When Does Winter Start In NYC
Winter is officially December 21-March 22 and NYC seasons feel super well-defined. January and February tend to be the coldest and most likely to see snow, though snow in December and March are not uncommon either. I first visited NYC when I was a sophomore in college on spring break and we arrived to spring like temps and woke up to snow cover.
How Cold Does NYC Get In The Winter
The average temperatures in NYC during the winter are warmer than other parts of the state, averaging anywhere between 25-40 degrees according to the National Weather Service. Snow fall is most common in January and February.
How To Dress For NYC Winter
Cowl Neck Sweater, Denim, and Sneakers with a Winter Coat
Whenever we fly to NYC, I like to have an easy flight outfit that transitions to lunch and a little exploring in case our room is not quite ready yet at The Library Hotel. Baggier denim is nice to be able to wear a pair of fleece lined long johns underneath if needed. I also highly recommend a coat with buttons, a zipper, or a tie to keep the wind out. I also wear these Rothy’s sneaks in the city because they are easily washable once we are back home.
Fleece Lined Coat and Leggings for an All-Black Exploring Outfit
For a day of exploring without real plans or reservations, my go-to outfit is a pair of comfortable walking shoes that I can layer socks, like these boots, a pair of fleece-lined leggings, a tunic sweater, and a long, fleece lined coat to fight off the wind chill. I do like to add layers because walking around really helps with staying warm. I rented this coat in my Nuuly and ended up loving it so much I kept it.

Black puffer jackets never got out of style because they are a necessity in bitterly cold temperatures. I was never more thrilled to have one than our first trip to NYC together when we were exploring Central Park. The longer the better!

I have long been a fan of winter white and this outfit screams chic to me! Those shoes would not be a pick for me given how cold the ground is in the winter, though I love everything else. I would swap the shoes for these water resistant booties.

The other pair of boots I cannot live without when traveling to NYC in the winter months are these fur-lined boots. I treated them so that they can get wet without damaging them and they were a great investment for me several years ago. They pair well with denim, leggings, and keep your feet nice and warm without needing to add too many layers of socks.
