A couple of weeks ago, Glory & I met for brunch at Plates Neighborhood Kitchen. We’ve both been wanting to try this restaurant for a while, but even more so since Chef Jake Wood took over as the head chef. We thoroughly enjoyed our time learning more about the restaurant, its tribute to local artisans and farmers, and the food was outstanding.
The restaurant has an amazing set up with a gorgeous patio and the option for open doors into the restaurant if the weather permits. It was packed, so be sure to make a reservation using OpenTable, but service was quick, efficient, and warm. Our server was attentive and took time to share the details that make Plates so unique.

For starters, their dish ware is locally made by an artist from Durham and I immediately loved the personal detail of that. Many of the team helps create seasonal chalkboard art in the restaurant, including announcing the local farms that the restaurant uses to craft their menu. Additionally, local artwork is featured throughout the restaurant as well.

Glory and I started our meal with an order of deviled eggs, one of our favorite treats. They often switch out the toppings, so the ones we had that day had bacon jam, which was a tasty combination.
I was so excited to try the soft shell crab BLT for brunch. Soft shell crab is one of my favorite dishes for the season, and this one did not disappoint. It was served with bacon jam instead of strips of bacon and it was a great flavor.
Glory opted for the chicken & waffle sandwich, and she loved this twist on this dish.
For dessert, we tried the strawberry shortcake and the cheer wine cake. While I am not a huge dessert person, these tasted just like spring, which I truly appreciate. The cheer wine cake was light and fluffy, while the strawberry shortcake was so fresh.
I highly recommend making your next brunch plans at Plates Neighborhood Kitchen. The food is familiar yet has unique twists and is truly a gem on Glenwood South. Check out other favorite patio spots here.
