Skin Care Routine Steps: How to Improve your Daily Skincare

Skin Care Routine Steps featured by top US beauty blog, I'm Fixin' To

When I turned 30, I really began focusing on maintaining my skin car routine and breaking some of the bad beauty habits I shared two years ago. I have been working on bettering my skin care routine steps,  especially since I started getting skin checks every six months (read more about that here).  While I am not the poster child for beauty blogging or products, here are some of the ways I’ve improved my daily skincare routine.

Skin Care Routine Steps: How to Improve your Daily Skincare

  1. Bad Habit: Splurging on products and then not using them
Improvement: I was really bad about splurging on products and then not using them more than a couple of times. This partially went with being intentional with purchasing and not buying things just to buy them. I also rarely try a new product now. I spend my time sampling products and making sure it’s something I’ll commit to using AND that I will actually like. I do this either by trying travel size products or trying a sample in the store.
  2. Bad Habit: Not washing my face and/or applying moisturizer consistently each night
Improvement: This habit formed nicely on its own. I started setting an alarm to do my night time routine to create the habit. Now, I couldn’t tell you the last time I went to bed without washing my face and putting moisturizer on. I also like my routine, now. It really does help me relax to help me get ready for bed.
  3. Bad Habit: Having a gazillion make-up products but only using the same 6 products over and over
Improvement: I have really been more intentional with how I’m spending my money in my 30s. I really don’t like to waste products, so I really make sure that I like it. I recently got a facial at AILLEA, and as a result, I decided to try a new face wash. But, I only decided to get it after I really liked how it felt and how it cleansed. I would also say that getting regular facials has helped me find products I like. Did you know that AILLEA has clean beauty facials at their shop in Cameron Village? They do mini facials as well, which is a great way to pamper yourself, even if you don’t have the full hour to devote!
  4. Bad Habit: Only relying on manicures and pedicures to moisturize my cuticles and heels
Improvement: I keep moisturizers and cuticle oil in my nightstand drawer. I still wouldn’t say I’m great at this, but I definitely am getting better. I realized how much longer it makes my manicures last and how much better my feet feel, so it’s become an easier transition.
  5. Bad Habit: Going too long between eye brow waxes
Improvement: I’ve made this part of my hair appointments when I go visit Katy. However, in between appointments, I tweeze and use this set to fill in my brows and maintain them. It works like a charm, and honestly, I feel like makes me look way more put together.
  6. Bad Habit: Forgetting to reapply sunscreen at day events in the fall or winter
Improvement: To be honest, I won’t be forgetting this anymore. After all my recent issues with my skin, I always keep sunscreen with me. David also keeps some in his car as well, so we are never without it. It’s a non-negotiable for me at this stage in my life.
  7. Bad Habit: Starting to use products before I’ve finished with my current ones
Improvement: I regularly clean out my make-up drawer and the cabinet where I keep any other beauty supplies. I only buy products when I am almost out, which makes it less likely for me to waste them. I really did go through and throw out enough almost full containers of products that were expired that I made a commitment to myself not to do that again.
  8. Bad Habit: Inconsistently wearing my retainer at nights
Improvement: As silly as it sounds, I asked for a quote at my dentist for Invisalign, and that was enough to make me start wearing my retainer again.
  9. Bad Habit: Forgetting to apply moisturizer after showering
Improvement: I found a moisturizer that I like using, so forgetting isn’t an option any longer. Plus, I use a self tanner a couple of times a week, so I just stay on schedule with that to help remember.
  10. Bad Habit: Avoiding washing my hair because I don’t have time to dry & style it
Improvement: Dry shampoo has really stepped its game up in the past two years. I use a dry shampoo and texturizing spray to make my shampoos last longer. After applying, I blow dry my hair out, and style it either with a straightener or a curling wand. I definitely feel more put together that way, too!
