I am so proud to share an eastern North Carolina favorite with you today! Â Recently, I made the hour and a half drive northeastern to Halifax, NC to eat supper at The Hen & The Hog. Â Fall is one of my favorite times to visit eastern North Carolina and I was thrilled to bring Clarke and Glory to town with me to show off the town and the restaurant.
Eastern North Carolina Favorite: The Hen & The Hog
We arrived in time for me to show them around Historic Halifax, which is one of my favorite parts of the town. Â I have long loved American history, especially the Federal Era, and I attribute some of my interest to growing up near Halifax and having my dad take me to visit every summer. Â I’ll save you a long history lesson, but the Halifax Resolves was written urging the colonies to declare their independence from Britain, and you can see nods to that throughout The Hen & The Hog’s decor.

I love that owner, Patterson Wilson, has restored this building and her interior decorating details are absolutely impressive. Â She has been doing so much work to breathe life back into this quaint downtown. Â My longtime friend, London, is doing amazing work at the restaurant as well, and took care of sending out the most delicious picks from the menu.

We arrived in time to sample the fall menu, and y’all, the fall menu was absolutely delicious! Â For starters, we had fried pimiento cheese bites, sweet potatoes with fried onions and salsa, and fried oysters.

For dinner, we had the filet, pork, and shrimp & grits. Â If shrimp and grits are on the menu, you can best believe I’ll be ordering it. Â It was hard to say which one of the entrees was my favorite, so I’d recommend going with friends and ordering a variety to share.

Now, I’m not one with a sweet tooth, but we shared the apple cinnamon bread pudding, the chocolate cake, and their homemade ice cream! Â And to be honest, we typically have dessert here because I love their ice cream options. They’re usually not overly sweet and have unique flavors, like sweet potato.

If you haven’t been to The Hen & The Hog, I cannot recommend it enough. Â Make a day trip out of it (use my travel guide here), and make reservations for dinner. Â You won’t regret it! Â P.S. There is even a cute Air BnB if you decide to spend the night!
