It’s hard to believe that it’s already October and the weather has been absolutely gorgeous over the past few weeks here in North Carolina. Fall is a tricky time here in the South, where it is chilly in the morning and then pushing the 80s in the afternoon. I’ve been working on adding items to my closet that are versatile and can be layered in the cooler mornings and evenings without being too warm in the afternoons. I’ve rounded up a style guide on what to wear in the fall when it’s still warm.
Here are three outfits that I wear on repeat when transitioning from summer to fall and here are the ways I’m still wearing white after Labor Day.

Style Guide: What to Wear in the Fall When It’s Warm
Despite its perceived limitations with the heat and lack of predictability, fall has a lot of possibilities and can be fun to shop your closet to mix and match outfits. I have enjoyed finding lightweight items in fall colors or in fabrics that are seasonally appropriate in silhouettes that will transition nicely once the cooler weather arrives.
Use Fall Colors
I tend to gravitate towards fall colors in tanks and tees that I can throw a jacket on with or add a wrap to it. Colors to consider are navy, emerald and hunter greens, burgundy and wine colors, shade of brown, and burnt oranges. I have camisoles and blouses in these colors to pair with skirts (more on this below) and jeans.
Add Light Layers
Light layers are the way to go during this period of fall! Using those camisoles or body suits under sweaters and jackets are great ways to have ways to stay cool when it gets hot. I am a fan of utility jackets and faux leather or suede jackets as options that transcend the seasons.
Reach for Dresses & Skirts
Regardless of the season, I gravitate towards dresses and skirts, though this is the best time in my opinion. You don’t have to wear tights yet, which is a huge bonus! I recently paired a silk camisole with a faux leather skirt and suede sandals. I also have been pairing long sleeve dresses in fall hues in silks and cotton with booties and riding boots. Also, throwing on a faux leather jacket with season-neutral dresses is a fun way to style them, too.
Accessorize!
Accessories are my favorite part of outfits, so swap your summer bags and jewelry. Adding notes of fall trends to your accessories help carry summer outfits into the new season. It’s also an affordable way to update your closet, too! I also rely on my Rent the Runway subscription to incorporate fall accessories in a more affordable and sustainable way. If you’re interested in joining Rent the Runway, you can get 40% off your first two months of an 8-item or 16-item plan with code RTRFAM58E7FA9.
Incorporate Textures
Textures are another great way to transition summer outfits. Whether it’s pairing your favorite white blouse and shorts with suede booties or a faux leather jacket with a silk dress.
