Recently, David and I went to Durham for an overnight date night to have his belated birthday celebration. A few years ago when we went to Nashville, we heard Devin Dawson and became instant fans. When David learned he was playing at the Carolina Theatre, he asked for tickets for his birthday. We had the best time and are excited to share things to do in Durham, NC at night for the ultimate date!
Unique Things to Do in Durham NC at Night
Check-In at 21c Museum Hotel
We checked in at the 21c Museum Hotel, which is one of my favorite spots in Durham. I’m a big fan of 21c Hotels (check out the one in Louisville), and our room was really spectacular. We stayed in the Luxury Suite, which was an amazing, open space and perfect for relaxing before kicking off our date night. The views were beautiful and we enjoyed watching the sun set over the Bull City.
Happy Hour at the 21c Art Gallery
After getting ready, we went downstairs to grab a cocktail so we could explore the 21c Art Gallery exhibits. There are some permanent pieces but the gallery changes occasionally with an upcoming exhibit in January, “the Future is Female.” We also went down to the Vault for a little bit as well. It’s such a cool, repurposed space!

Supper at Counting HouseÂ

Before our concert, we had supper at Counting House where we started with a charcuterie tray. David ordered the burger and fries, while I had the casarecce pasta that came with the biggest and freshest radishes! The pesto sauce was really delicious and had a refreshing citrusy note. We finished our meal with cotton candy before dashing off to the concert.
Concert at Carolina Theatre

We were both so excited to hear Devin Dawson on the acoustic tour with Kip Moore at the Carolina Theatre. It was our first time at the venue, and we loved how close it was to the 21c, plus how quaint and intimate the theatre was. We were surprised at how great our seats were and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Honestly, we’ll be looking at more concerts and performances at the Carolina Theatre!
Night Cap at Kingfisher

After the show, we stopped at Kingfisher for a night cap. If you haven’t been to this place in Durham yet, you’re missing a hidden gem! There is so much thought in the set up, the cocktails, the fixtures, and the staff makes you feel right at home. We had a slice of apple & persimmon pie with our cocktails, which was so tasty! We are big fans of Kingfisher and highly recommend a stop here!
Brunch at Jack Tar & the Colonel’s Daughter

The next morning, we checked out of the hotel and had brunch at Jack Tar & the Colonel’s Daughter. I adore Jack Tar’s take on dinner food, and the vibe is so hip. We got to try the Brussels sprouts which had great flavor and heat thanks to unexpected ingredients like peppers and peanuts. David ordered pancakes and I ordered the shrimp burger and wow was it delicious. It was a different take on my traditional go-to shrimp burgers–it was more like a crab cake–and I was pleasantly surprised. I can’t wait to head back in a few weeks when The Colonel’s Daughter, the lounge, is transformed into a holiday wonderland!
