This year, I have gotten back into updating our home again after taking a brief hiatus. It started with the little facelift I gave to the home office built-ins and then I decided to move into the foyer. I had a bit of a vision, but after our sudden and completely unexpected loss of our precious Gizmo, we decided to make that space a bright, focal point for us. So, here are the 4 ways we updated our foyer this year to capture Gizmo’s essence and to transition that space into more of a reflection of our personality.

Hang Signature Wallpaper
David and I do have a signature wallpaper in our home. We both love this black and gold wallpaper from Rifle Paper and have it at the end of the hallway and in my closet. I just absolutely love the way this transforms a space, and I have especially appreciated what it does to small spaces. Our walls are a tad choppy and this has done a lot for those walls.
Bring in Pops of Color
This space already gets pretty good natural light, so I wanted to add some bright colors to the area. I opted for a vintage rug from The Cary Cottage for the entrance and the funkiest Ruggable for the center. It is a nod to David’s love of flamingos and to Gizmo because he loved laying on the center rug during the workday so he could keep an eye on the front door and me while I was on calls.
Still on my wishlist is to add a storm door to the front to bring in even more natural light while I’m home throughout the day. The photo on the left is the current state and the one on the right is the door I’m currently on the hunt for.
Add in Covert Storage
My friend, Katelyn, had these ottomans and the acrylic table in her entryway and I fell in love with the way it looked so much that I replicated it in our space. I especially love that the ottomans offer covert storage. I keep blankets in here that are easy to bring out to the front porch. These ottomans are super lightweight and come in a variety of colors. They are a great quality for the price point.
Varying Lighting Options
Right at the front door, I already have a lamp for a little extra light without having to turn over the pendant. However, I wanted to add a bit more light around the mirror, another Cary Cottage find from a few years ago. I opted for these sconces with battery-operated light bulbs on a remote. While we could have wired them, I did want to keep it as an option should we sell our house for the next owners to not have too much trouble changing out the wallpaper or the lights, so this seemed like a good compromise. I also added my favorite battery-operated candlesticks in these holders to the table as well.
Other Updates
I swapped out the entryway table from one that David built to a slightly smaller one. And I swapped out our electrical outlet plates with gold ones.
I also added a stack of vintage North Carolina books, gifted to me by one of my favorite native North Carolinian friends, and my new go-to Hotel Lobby Candle that is *perfect* for fall and winter.
Lastly, I added a plant that was gifted to us by friends after we lost our little Gizmo and made this his final resting spot so that he always keeps watch over the front door.
