Elkin is located in the North Carolina foothills and is one of the hidden gems of this region. Elkin is located along the Yadkin River and offers beautiful views of the North Carolina landscape. It is a great spot to do some leaf-peeping in the fall and provides a lot of fun and interesting things for all kinds of travelers. Elkin is famous for their trail access and the amazing vineyards in the area. Today, I am sharing an Elkin NC travel guide to help you make the most of your time in this small Yadkin Valley town.
Worth noting, while many of our neighbors in western North Carolina towns were affected by the damage from Tropical Storm Helene, including some of the businesses close to the Yadkin River in Elkin, the town is open for business and ready to welcome visitors. Please visit here to help local businesses during their peak season.

Elkin NC Travel Guide
I recently visited Elkin, NC, with some of my girlfriends for a weekend getaway, and we truly had the best time. It is a charming small town with quite a lot to do right in the downtown area. I have included some of my favorite things to do and see while in town and at the end of this post, an interactive Google Map you can use when visiting as well.
Where is Elkin NC Located
Elkin, NC, is located in two counties, Wilkes and Surry County. It is a quick 1.5-hour drive from Charlotte to Elkin. From Raleigh, it is an approximate 2.5-hour drive. It is a relatively smooth drive along highways for the major parts of the drive.
Because of Elkin’s location on both the Yadkin River and Big Elkin Creek, it has long attracted settlers. Originally, it was settled by the Paleo-Indians 12,000 years ago. As early as 500 BC, the Sioux Indians had settled along the Yadkin River. In the 1840s, one man and his descendants moved across the Yadkin River from the Jonesville side and, within a decade, had established Elkin Manufacturing Company. Further up the river, a small wool mill was established in 1877 that has grown into Elkin’s largest industry today. Peep those blankets! The Chatham x WM Brown Camp Blanket is my favorite. Elkin also experienced a boom thanks to the Northwestern North Carolina Railroad that arrived in town in 1890.
Today, Elkin is known as a trail town because 3 sanctioned hiking trails all meet here, the Mountain-to-Sea Trail, the Overmountain Victory Trail, and the Yadkin River Blue Water Trail. It also boasts several local wineries that are part of the Surry County Wine Trail.
What to Do in Elkin NC
Grab a Bottle of Sangiovese at Christian Paul Vineyards and Stay a While

One of the newer wineries in Western NC, this is a must-visit! Guests will feel like they have stepped into an Italian villa with a welcoming interior and an expansive covered patio. The namesake of the vineyard, Christian Paul, comes from a wine family. His family owns a vineyard in Montepulciano, so it is fitting that the Montepulciano offered at Christian Paul Vineyards came home with us on our visit.
The biggest crowd-pleaser for our group was the Sangiovese. We did a delightful wine tasting, and we really enjoyed the 500 Lire, which is a white blend that includes an Albarino grape. Their sparkling white wine was delicious as well. In fact, when we told one of the shop owners in town that we were going there, she told us they had her favorite bubbly in the area, and she nailed it!
We thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon here and highly recommend planning on spending time learning about their wine and enjoying the view.
Christian Paul Vineyards is at 156 Tuscan Way, Elkin, NC 28621.
Book a Reservation at Dynamis Estate Wines for a Wine Tasting

Dynamis Estate Wines is located right outside of Elkin in the town of Joneville. This gated property requires an advanced reservation for a wine tasting and enjoy the 2.5-mile drive up the mountain. The views here are absolutely gorgeous, and the wine is delightful. Their wines are exceptional in an elevated space, and they offer seasonal, locally inspired bites to be added to your tasting experience. I came home with several bottles and a cozy throw that I use on the front porch on cooler days. Read more about our tasting experience and the wines I brought home here.
Dynamis Estate Wines is at 1004 Highland Rd, Jonesville, NC 28642.

What are the Best Places to Eat in Elkin NC
Southern on Main

Southern on Main is a staple right on Main Street in Elkin. This restaurant serves up a tasty brunch, as seen in my Surry County Travel Guide here. That said, their dinner service is also quite nice! We started with fried okra and the warm pimento cheese. For an entree, try the Pecan Crusted Mountain Trout. It is really delicious! You also can’t go wrong with their soups. Our favorite is the Crab & Red Pepper Bisque.
Southern on Main is at 102 E Main St, Elkin, NC 28621.
River Roast Coffee

While technically right across the bridge over the Yadkin River in Jonesville, it is a great coffee shop to visit while visiting the Elkin area. We were able to walk here quickly from our stay at Three Trails. River Roast offers delicious seasonal coffee drinks and outrageously good pastries. We hung out for quite a while playing Clue, and there were other board games and puzzles to enjoy while there. The outdoor seating area is cozy, and it is such a welcoming space. Do not skip on the croissant or the oatmeal cream pie.
River Roast Coffee is at 442 N Bridge St, Jonesville, NC 28642.
The Reeves Theater and Cafe

I mentioned that the Reeves Theater is a cool spot to catch a show while in Elkin, and you should definitely not miss grabbing a meal here! We all grabbed a burger for lunch, and they were all delicious! I ordered the pepper jack burger, which had a good kick, and a couple of friends each ordered the Smashburger. Whatever you do, order the pasta salad as a side! You also can grab a drink and enjoy Elkin’s social district with a sip and stroll.
Reeves Theater is at 129 W Main St, Elkin, NC 28621.
Angry Troll Brewing

Angry Troll Brewing is a chic brewery on its sidewalk seating and a hip, renovated warehouse on the interior. It has a lot of seating available and is great for large groups. We enjoyed our dinner here so much that we went back for lunch before heading out of town on Sunday. Their starters are delicious! Try the cheese curds or the jalapeno poppers, which are served with a sweet chili sauce. For entrees, the Triple Threat pizza or the Bianco are good options to share. The chicken philly is another great choice for an entree and their fries are the best kind of pub fries.
Angry Troll Brewing is at 222 E Main St, Elkin, NC 28621.
Elkin Creek Vineyard

Talk about a hidden gem! Elkin Creek Vineyards is located on the site of a historic 1896 grist mill where two creeks merge together. The property features cabins, a restaurant that serves up delicious pizzas, and European-inspired style wines. This is a must-visit spot while in town! What are the Best Places to Stay In Elkin NC
The Carolina Experience Three Trails

The Carolina Experience Three Trails is a one-of-a-kind property housed in the first building on Main Street in the 1800s. The exposed brick, high ceilings, and natural light are truly stunning. While I always enjoy staying in a hotel, this one is even more special with its fully stocked kitchen and a rooftop deck that overlooks the Yadkin River. Grab a bottle of wine from one of the local wineries and head up to the rooftop to catch a sunset.
There are 14 unique units in Three Trails and it is in the perfect spot of town. It is located on Main Street on the main intersection in downtown Elkin and makes this an incredibly walkable place to call home for the weekend. I also really enjoyed the contactless entry; though it was quite easy to connect with a staff member if anything is needed through text messaging.
