It’s now officially that time of year to start planting spring flowers and that means that David and I have been spending time preparing our front porch space for some color! Each year, we’ve gotten a little bit better at our front porch plans, and this year, we’ve gotten even better thanks to the experts at Fairview Garden Center in Raleigh! We’re sharing five spring planting tips to make the most of your  blooms!
Fairview Garden Center is a staple in the Raleigh, Holly Springs, Apex, and Cary areas. It’s been around since 1974 and its facilities include 62,000 acres of greenhouse space and several acres of trees, shrubs, and perennials. One of my favorite aspects is that it is family owned and operated by three generations and they are incredibly passionate, attentive, helpful, and kind. Be prepared to spend an afternoon exploring the rows of flowers and trees and the shop that features a wide variety of home decor and gift ideas.

5 Spring Planting Tips with Fairview Garden Center
Know the Best Times to Plant
In years past, I’ve planted a bit too early and lost an early round of blooms to frosts. Fairview Garden Center recommends April 15th as a date that is generally a safe one to begin your spring planting. It’s easy to remember since it’s Tax Day, too! So, start planting on or after that date to maximize the lives of your plants and avoid having to replant.
Check Out your Sunlight Exposure
While I have set plants I like to include each year such as ferns and hydrangeas, I also try planting a few different varieties which can be a hit or miss for us. I’ve fried palms because of too much sun exposure or put plants that needed full sun in shaded spots.
This year, I made a point of taking a look at where the sunlight exposure is and brought that with me to discuss with Heather at Fairview Garden Center. She helped me pick out plants that would thrive in our heavily shaded spots on our porch, ones that would appreciate the consistent sun near our porch swing, and others that could handle afternoon sunlight on our porch steps.
Explore Different Color Combinations
I’m not one to shy away from color and I prefer complimentary colors rather than uniform matching of plants. Explore different color combinations and find plants that will draw your eye to the various blooms and textures in a planter. One of my favorite offerings that Fairview Garden Center has are pre-made containers. They have beautiful combinations and ideas that are unique, eye-catching, and easy to maintain!
Use a Quality Soil
Don’t skip on quality soil! It really does matter in keeping your plants healthy and extending their time. I use Epsoma Organic Moisture Mix for our planting. Ask the team at Fairview Garden Center which of their products they’d recommend depending on what and where you are planting.
Stick to a Watering Schedule
One thing I learned during last year’s quarantine orders was just how much a consistent watering schedule kept our plants going. Who knew, right? David and I enjoy our evenings watering the plants and it was helpful to talk with Heather about how to water the plants we picked out for our porch. She gave me advice on what to look for if the plants needed additional watering or to be moved either into the shade or into more sunlight.

Be sure to stop by Fairview Garden Center to find the perfect plants for your spring gardening needs! And stay tuned for our spring front porch reveal next month where we’ll be highlighting what we planted and how we’re maintaining our blooms.
