30 Best NC Small Towns for Road Trips This Summer (2026 Guide)

Now that summer is almost here, I find myself looking for places for road trips on weekends this time of year. One of my favorite parts of this space is that I get to share some of my favorite small towns in North Carolina with you, including the best NC small towns for road trips. Over the past 10 years, I have had a great time exploring local areas to be able to write day trips and weekend guides for I’m Fixin’ To. I have a page where the Best of North Carolina travel guides are linked. I am so excited to share some of the best NC small towns for road trips this summer.

Eastern North Carolina Road Trip Ideas

Beaufort

Beaufort is one of the oldest towns in North Carolina, and you can tell in the best possible way. This charming town is filled with historic homes, a charming waterfront boardwalk, and boutique shopping galore. Hop a ferry out to Rachel Carson Reserve to spot the wild horses, then grab dinner overlooking Taylor’s Creek. Whatever you do, do not miss a meal at Beaufort Grocery! A trip to Beaufort is an easy pairing with a stop in nearby Morehead City.

Belhaven

Belhaven is just so quaint and charming with beautiful waterfront views! Be sure to check out Between Water & Main for the most perfect bed & breakfast experience, and take some time to wander the shops along Main Street. The town has an assortment of delicious restaurants, unique shops, and the waterfront park along the Pungo River is the perfect spot to watch the boats come in at sunset.

Columbia

Tucked along the Scuppernong River, Columbia is a sleepy little gem and the perfect gateway to the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge. Walk the boardwalk downtown, keep an eye out for black bears, visit the Red Wolf Center, and stop by the Pocosin Arts School for a bit of local craft culture.

Duck

Duck has some of the best boardwalk shopping and dining on the entire Outer Banks. Rent a bike and cruise the Duck Trail along the sound, then catch one of the most gorgeous sunsets in the state right from the town green. Make a reservation at Vivian Howard’s Theodosia to try the best tomato pie you will ever have. Edenton

Heading to historic downtown Edenton, you will see why it was named the South’s prettiest small town. Take a stroll along the waterfront to see the historic Chowan County Courthouse and the iconic Cupola House, then grab a bite at one of the cozy downtown cafes. It makes a great location for a pit stop before heading down to Swan Quarter if you are heading to Ocracoke, the jewel of North Carolina’s Outer Banks.

Greenville

Head to Greenville for the weekend to do some shopping, exploring, and maybe consider timing your visit to attend an East Carolina football game! Spend the morning browsing the shops in Uptown Greenville, then take a stroll along the Town Common on the Tar River. And whatever you do, make dinner reservations at Ford + Shep.

Halifax County

Take a trip to Halifax County, which just so happens to be my home county! Walk through Historic Halifax State Historic Site to soak up some Revolutionary War history, then head into town for a slower pace and some friendly small-town hospitality. It is an underrated stop that does not get nearly enough credit. Be sure to stop off in Enfield to shop at Southern Secrets at Meares and make a dinner reservation at Blue Jay Bistro in Littleton.

Kinston

Be sure to check out a Down East Bird Dawgs game at Grainger Stadium on your trip to Kinston. Afterward, wander through the historic downtown for some great local shopping, and make a reservation at Chef and the Farmer if you want to see where the whole farm-to-table movement in Eastern NC really took off. The CSS Neuse Civil War Interpretive Center is also a fascinating stop if you have some extra time. Manteo

Manteo is the prettiest downtown with excellent shopping, a gorgeous inn, and delicious restaurants. Wander the waterfront boardwalk, visit the Elizabethan Gardens and Fort Raleigh, and catch a showing of The Lost Colony at the Roanoke Island Festival Park if the timing works out. Fun fact: Manteo is where Andy Griffith called home for the last years of his life.

Ocracoke

Ocracoke deserves its own spot on this list, not just a mention along the way! Getting there is part of the adventure, whether you take the ferry from Swan Quarter or Cedar Island or opt to roadtrip down the Outer Banks and catch the Hatteras Island Ferry. Once you arrive, rent a golf cart, go see the wild ponies, and visit the Ocracoke Lighthouse before settling in for fresh seafood at one of the village’s tiny waterfront spots, including the recently re-opened Jolly Roger Pub.

Oriental

This gorgeous coastal town has a lot to offer for a weekend away! Known as the sailing capital of North Carolina, it is the perfect place to wander the marina, browse the local art galleries, and grab fresh seafood right on the water. Do not miss the Oriental History Museum for a quick look at what makes this tiny town so special and the Oriental Community Labyrinth is a peaceful place for meditation, prayer, and reflection.

Tarboro

Tarboro is a great day trip destination to take in some history, grab a good beer, and have a delicious meal! The historic downtown is one of the largest historic districts in the state, so it is worth setting aside some time to just wander and take it all in. Stop by the local brewery to cap off the afternoon and either grab something to eat from one of the visiting food trucks or make a reservation to dine at On the Square. Whatever you do, do not sleep on their wine list!

Topsail

Topsail Island is my go-to for a laid-back beach town feel without the crowds. Spend the morning on the sand, then check out the Missiles and More Museum for a fascinating bit of local history before dinner at one of the low-key spots. On our most recent trip, we grabbed a coffee and a new book at the local bookshop, had lunch on the patio at Beach Shop & Grill, and then spent the afternoon hanging in the pools during low tide.

Washington

The town that got me hooked on visiting small towns was Washington, NC. This town offers a great selection of restaurants and gorgeous views of the Pamlico River, and the waterfront boardwalk downtown is one of my favorite spots in the eastern part of the state to just sit and relax for a while. Be sure to check out Goose Creek State Park while in town, and grab a coffee downtown before you hit the road.

Central North Carolina Road Trip Ideas

Albemarle

Albemarle is a sweet little stop right at the edge of Uwharrie National Forest. Wander the historic downtown, then head out to the forest for a hike or a paddle on Badin Lake. It is an easy, unhurried day trip from the Charlotte area.

Carrboro

Carrboro is Chapel Hill’s quirky, artsy neighbor, and I love it for that! Catch a show at Cat’s Cradle, browse the Carrboro Farmers’ Market on a Saturday morning, and grab a bite at one of the many locally owned restaurants downtown. My favorite is Tesoro, and I cannot rave about a meal here enough!

Chapel Hill

Chapel Hill is the perfect getaway spot, whether you are planning a staycation at the iconic Carolina Inn or want to explore this epic college town. Spend an afternoon wandering Franklin Street for shopping and people-watching, then catch a show at the historic Varsity Theatre or take a walk through the UNC campus. Do make plans to stop at Merritt’s for a famous BLT.

Hillsborough

Hillsborough is such a lovely small town! Add it to your list if you have yet to visit and plan a stay at The Colonial Inn if you opt for an overnight trip. Walk the Riverwalk along the Eno River, browse the local shops downtown, and grab a bite at one of the many restaurants the town is known for. David and I recently took a day trip to Hillsborough with Ruthie and we loved how dog friendly the town was!

Pittsboro

It is no secret that I am obsessed with Pittsboro and Fearrington Village! Wander the shops around the courthouse circle downtown, then head over to Fearrington for a stroll past the famous belted Galloway cows before lunch at the Belted Goat. If you are visiting on a Saturday, head down to Galloway’s for their weekly wine tasting. It is such a hidden gem in the area.

Saxapahaw

I just absolutely adore Saxapahaw and it is the perfect spot for a day trip! Spend the afternoon at the Rivermill Village shops, grab a bite at the Saxapahaw General Store before heading down to the river, and catch some live music at the Haw River Ballroom if you time it right.

Southern Pines

Southern Pines has such a lovely, refined small-town feel, all rolling golf courses and horse country charm. Stroll the walkable downtown for boutique shopping, then spend an afternoon at Weymouth Woods Sandhills Nature Preserve.

Western North Carolina Road Trip Ideas

Black Mountain

David and I fell in love with Black Mountain a few years ago and had the best weekend trip there. Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, it is truly a great spot to beat the heat during the summer. Spend the morning browsing the many local shops and galleries downtown, then head out to Lake Tomahawk for a walk or Montreat for a quiet hike in the mountains.

Blowing Rock

Blowing Rock is always a good idea, in my opinion! Take a hike around Moses H. Cone Memorial Park, which is part of the Blue Ridge National Parkway. Make it a small-town excursion and check out Banner Elk and Valle Crucis. It is also the perfect spot to drive up to Grandfather Mountain for an afternoon as well.

Bryson City

One of the best anniversary trips was to Bryson City a few years back! This treetop soaking tub stays on my NC bucket list. Take a scenic ride on the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad, spend an afternoon tubing or rafting on the Nantahala River, and grab dinner downtown before calling it a night back at Lakeview at Fontana.

Burnsville

Burnsville is located about an hour outside of Asheville and quite a lovely town! NuWray Hotel is a wonderful home base right in the heart of downtown. It is also the home of the highest peak east of the Mississippi River, Mount Mitchell. Enjoy exploring the many shops and local art galleries, and enjoy the many dining options within walking distance of the NuWray.

Elkin

Elkin sits right in the heart of the Yadkin Valley wine region, so it is a must for a slow-paced wine country road trip. Sip your way through nearby vineyards like Christian Paul, then stroll the historic downtown before finding a spot for dinner. We loved our stay at Three Trails — a perfect home base for exploring the area. Whatever you do, make a reservation to do a wine tasting at Dynamis Estate Wines, located right outside of Elkin in neighboring Jonesville.

Hendersonville

Hendersonville is a beautiful mountain town to spend a weekend with some great trails, awesome dining, local breweries, and delightful shopping. Wander historic Main Street for boutique shopping and people-watching, then head just outside of town to DuPont State Forest for a hike to Triple Falls. Be sure to catch a sunset and some waterfalls while in town.

Mount Airy

Visit Mount Airy and the surrounding towns in Surry County. Known as the real-life inspiration for Mayberry, it is full of nostalgic charm, from a ride down Main Street in a squad car replica to browsing the local shops. Whatever you do, be sure to try a sonker and a ground steak sandwich.

Tryon

Tryon is such a quaint mountain town with tributes to the hometown queen, Nina Simone, lovely local shops, a delightful winery, and nice trails. Wander downtown to see the murals and public art honoring Simone, then head out to Tryon International Equestrian Center if you are visiting during one of their events. It is a lovely, low-key spot to slow down for a weekend.

Valle Crucis

Valle Crucis is the kind of place that makes you want to slow way down. Stop into the original Mast General Store for a browse, then spend the afternoon soaking up mountain views along the Watauga River. Be sure to grab a drink and a snack at the Barn at Mast Farm Inn. The Inn is truly one of the most magical places in North Carolina.

Final Thoughts

North Carolina has no shortage of small towns worth a detour, whether you are chasing coastal breezes out east, a lazy afternoon in the Piedmont, or mountain views out west. My hope is that this list gives you a starting point for your own summer of road trips, whether that means checking a few new towns off your list or finally making it back to an old favorite.
