This post is one that I’ve had a hard time hitting publish on for the past couple of weeks. However, I have learned a lot in the three plus years of blogging, but even more in the past year that I wanted to share. Through trial and error, networking with other bloggers, and learning from the best at The Blog Societies Conference & Workshop, I have really found what I enjoy about blogging.
Stick to your interests
I really felt like there were times I was forcing my content in the beginning. While this blog started out as a space for me to post about what I’d like to buy if I had unlimited funds and to practice my writing skills, I discovered a deeper passion through my blog. I really have focused this blog on sharing my love of eastern North Carolina, trying new restaurants, fashion, interior design, and my two fur balls. It has made blogging much more natural for me and I hope that comes across to my readers.
The worst is no
I have learned that the worst that can happen is a company or a brand will say no. I have pitched a lot of companies with my ideas and some have worked out and no hard feelings to the ones that didn’t. Either way, I figure it’s worth a shot to at least ask if we can collaborate. Remember, the worst they can say is no.
Community over Competition
Through having an awesome blogging community in Raleigh, I have learned that collaborating with other bloggers is not only so much fun, but so cool for my content. I actually really hate doing outfit pictures by myself. I feel so awkward, but having friends in the photos? I can cut up and get everyone laughing and it’s so much more enjoyable. Also, networking has been huge. I love that I have friends online whom I’ve never met in real life, but we connect through our spaces. Commenting on Instagram and blogs has been really helpful in meeting new people and finding new inspiration.
Value your work
There was a time where I felt it was more important to post than the quality of my post. Now, instead of rushing to put up a post, I’d rather make sure that I have all the details and kinks worked out. I didn’t post yesterday because my photos weren’t quite the level I wanted and I didn’t want to post it without dedicating the appropriate time.
It’s not easy
I never started this with any intention other than a creative outlet for me. I’ve always loved writing and I’ve always loved shopping and this seemed like a natural progression. However, it’s not easy. I have gotten some really great opportunities from this, but it also takes up a lot of my time. It’s not that I regret that, but my weekends and free evenings are usually spent working towards a goal of mine on this space. But also, it’s one of the more rewarding aspects of my blog because it’s proof of hard work paying off.
What have you learned about blogging? I want to take a moment and say thank you so much for your love and support over this space over the past few years. I really couldn’t do this without you! And to my IRL friends, thanks for tolerating me when I take pictures of our food and outfit pictures.
