One of my goals when traveling is to find a local, independent bookstore to browse and I always bring a book home as a souvenir. Bookstores are so cozy and inviting, and I always love seeing staff picks for books. They also feature great gift ideas for friends and family. Supporting local bookstores is a good way to boost the local economy while also supporting authors who pour so much of their hearts and souls into their works. With that being said, today, I am focusing on the best bookstores in Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill.

10 Best Bookstores in Raleigh Durham and Chapel Hill
A few years ago, I made a personal commitment to buy from local bookstores instead of big box stores. My exception to the rule is getting books from Book of the Month. That said, I am excited to share some of the best bookstores in the Research Triangle and hope you will consider checking one (or all ten) out.
Are Bookstores Dying?
So many of my reader friends listen to audio books and read on e-reading devices, and it is one of the reasons I like to remind people that reading is so personal. That includes how you like to process information, to what books you enjoy, to where and how you like to read. I also acknowledge that some of this ease of access to books has affected sales at local, independent bookstores and is one of the reasons I feel the way I do about buying a book from a locally owned shop in each city I visit.
I also utilize Bookshop.org to support independent bookstores. That said, bookstores are essential for community building, help foster a love of reading, and provide cultural opportunities and author events to get to learn more about your favorite authors in real life. We can help bookstores thrive by supporting them financially and also by sharing them on social media platforms and recommending ones to visit to friends and family.
What Are The Best Bookstores In North Carolina
There are so many great bookstores around the great state of North Carolina, and I hope you will add them to your travel plans when visiting. That said, here are my 10 best bookstores in the Triangle.
Blackbird Books & Coffee – Raleigh
Blackbird Books & Coffee is located in Raleigh’s historic City Market and offers a thoughtfully curated selection of new titles with an emphasis on female, queer, Black, Indigenous, and other minority authors, primarily focused on adult literature across all genres. Blackbird hosts monthly events like silent book club, Coffee & Crochet meet ups, and more. Monthly events can be found here. They also brew up delicious coffee drinks with really fun seasonal options and pastries from a local bakery. Blackbird also has a wonderful selection of gifts, including work by local artists.

Epilogue Books Chocolate Brews – Chapel Hill
Epilogue Books is such a cool spot serving up Mexican-style offerings in the cafe, pastries, coffee and chocolate drinks while having a large selection of new and gently used books. Epilogue also has quite a great children’s selection as well. In addition to their book selection, there are unique gifts available in the shop as well.
Epilogue partners with local businesses, including Carrboro Coffee Roasters, Ponysaurus Brewing of Durham, Videri Chocolate Factory and Escazú Chocolates of Raleigh, and Black Mountain Chocolate Factory of Winston-Salem. Flyleaf Books – Chapel Hill
Flyleaf Books is an incredible space with a wide variety of books and book clubs to participate. Featured reads for each of the clubs are offered at a 15% off discount when mentioning the book club in your order. Check out their book club options here. Flyleaf also offers many events for the community, including their midnight release parties for new releases. Their website offers a vast variety of book recommendations, including their Essential Reading for Locals and their most anticipated books of 2025.

Golden Fig Books – Carrboro and Durham
Golden Fig Books first location is in Durham, right near Guglhupf Bakery, Café, and Biergarten, and has an expansive collection of gently used and children’s books, they do also feature some new title as well. Golden Fig Books recently opened their second location in Carrboro in Carr Mill Mall. Focusing the inventory on used books, with their superior affordability and sustainability, helps Golden Fig to exemplify Durham’s values. Letters Community Bookshop – Durham
When Letters Community Bookshop transitioned from private ownership to a community-supported cooperative, I jumped at the chance to purchase an owner share. As a book lover, I love telling people I am an owner of a bookshop, especially one in such a great historic space. It is not too late for you to purchase your share. Check it out here.

Quail Ridge Books – Raleigh
Quail Ridge Books is a staple in the City of Oaks and boasts quite an iconic location in North Hills. Quail Ridge features a diverse collection of books, author events, book clubs, and more. I have attended quite a few author events in this location and can tell you that they do an incredible job.
One of my favorite features of Quail Ridge is they offer the opportunity to get a signed copy by a local author. Should you wish to purchase a signed copy of one of their books, you can access this page, click on their picture to order, and the Quail Ridge team contacts the author to come by and sign/personalize your book.

Reader’s Corner – Raleigh
This small, independent used bookstore is a staple on Hillsborough Street in Raleigh, and it is SO fun to browse in. In addition to buying and selling used books, Reader’s Corner also buys and sells pre-owned comic books, LPs, DVDs, CDs & Blu-rays. The Regulator Bookshop – Durham
The Regulator Bookshop has been around since 1976 and offers a large selection of adult and children’s books, great merch, and partners with the N.C. Women’s Prison Book Project. The Regulator has a wish list for books that are most requested. While The Regulator does not host in-store events, they are available to help with author readings, book signings, or any kind of “book pop-up” in the area and have a location in mind appropriate for your audience, the Regulator will help with ordering books, publicity on social media and in their biweekly newseltter, and listing the event on their events calendar. Rofhiwa Books – Durham
Pronounced Ro-Fee-Wah, Rofhiwa Book Café is a Black-owned independent Bookstore + Coffee shop in East Durham, NC. This bookstore features books by Black authors and offers coffee and tea. You can request a book here through their website. Spend an afternoon reading here with one of their coffee drinks and support Black authors and a locally owned Black-owned business in Durham.

So & So Books – Raleigh
Located in one my favorite neighborhoods in Raleigh, So-and-So Books is such a quaint, charming independent bookstore. If a title is not in stock, they will order and have it available for you in 2-3 days for pickup. The space is a great open concept, with featured books throughout, and a section specifically about all things North Carolina.
