In this post, I am sharing details on how we planned our trip to help create your own itineraries, plan your trip, and find the best wineries and places to visit!
Where is Sonoma California Located
Sonoma is a charming town located just 45 miles north of San Francisco, right in the heart of California’s famed wine country. As the gateway to the scenic 17-mile Sonoma Valley, it Is cradled between the picturesque Mayacamas and Sonoma Mountain ranges, stretching north to the southern edges of Santa Rosa and south to the San Pablo Bay. Sonoma is not only a key part of California’s Wine Country, it is also the center of the Sonoma Valley AVA, rich in both history and flavor. Fun fact: Sonoma was the site of the Bear Flag Revolt, where Californians declared independence from Mexico.
Being situated in Northern California, Sonoma’s climate is influenced by the nearby marine areas, leading to greater temperature fluctuations. Mornings and evenings are cooler, while daytime temperatures can warm up significantly, especially during spring. When we visited in early April, we found it chilly at the start and end of the day, so make sure to check the forecast and pack plenty of layers.
For those planning a visit, you have a couple of convenient options. You can fly into the Charles M. Schulz–Sonoma County Airport in Santa Rosa or into San Francisco International Airport, then rent a car for a scenic drive north. We chose to fly into San Francisco, rent a car, and base our stay in Santa Rosa, which worked out great for us as many delicious restaurants are in walking distance to the Air BnB we stayed at.
What to Do in Sonoma California for a Girls Trip
See the Redwoods at Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve
This is a must-visit when in Sonoma County! Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve preserves 805 acres of majestic Coast Redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens). Armstrong Redwoods is a natural sanctuary and every effort is being made to preserve and protect Coastal Redwoods in the Reserve. There are 9.2 miles of hiking trails in the reserve and is the best way to to experience the dramatic effects of these towering redwoods. It is truly an unreal experience and a bucket list one at that.

Taste California Wines
This is really the best part of a girls getaway to Sonoma County, CA! For our trip, we booked a driving service that helped plan our itinerary for our full day of wine tastings. We opted to use We Drive because they drove our rental car, which saved us a substantial amount of money! Our experience in Sonoma Wine Country was mixed with reservations in tasting rooms, and some where we just popped by and were able to get seats as walk-ins. Below, I am going to share the wineries and vineyards we visited followed by ones that are on my list to visit on my next trip!
Korbel Winery
Just a stone’s throw from Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve, Korbel offers a beautiful outdoor patio and crisp, refreshing sparkling wines. Established in 1882, this iconic winery specializes in a variety of sparkling wines that are perfect for any occasion. Even without a reservation, we could not resist popping into the tasting room for a spontaneous sampling, and it did not disappoint! We enjoyed the laid-back atmosphere, savored a few pours, and ended up taking a couple of bottles home to enjoy later that evening.

Francis Ford Coppola Winery
Our big wine tour day kicked off with a visit to the iconic Coppola Winery, and it could not have been a better start! We sampled a delightful selection of reds and whites, each paired with an assortment of flavorful dips that perfectly complemented the wines. The setting itself is absolutely breathtaking. Imagine sipping wine while taking in sweeping views of the mountains and vineyards. Coppola Winery is not just about wine; it is truly an experience. The property features two luxurious pools, an inviting on-site restaurant with Italian flair, and a collection of movie props from Francis Ford Coppola’s films, adding a unique touch of Hollywood charm. It is the kind of place where you could easily spend an entire afternoon soaking up the atmosphere.

DaVero Farms & Winery
When planning our trip with We Drive, we were told that DaVero Farms & Winery would be hard to leave—and they were not exaggerating! This place feels like a little slice of paradise. As soon as we arrived, we were greeted by the sweetest dog, Jesse, who instantly made us feel at home. The winery is also home to some adorable farm animals, including 3 piglets, adding to the rustic, laid-back vibe. We could not get enough of the delicious wines, homemade olive oils, and beautifully crafted charcuterie boards, all enjoyed in the idyllic outdoor seating areas surrounded by lush gardens.
Shannon guided us through the wine tasting, and honestly, I wanted to be her best friend by the end! She was so warm, knowledgeable, and passionate about the wines. We loved the experience so much that a couple of us could not resist joining the wine club on the spot. DaVero truly feels like a hidden gem where you can unwind, sip, and savor every moment.

Matanzas Creek Winery
For our final stop on our big winery tour day, we visited the stunning Matanzas Creek Winery, and it was the perfect way to wrap up our adventure. The winery boasts breathtaking views of the surrounding area, offering the perfect backdrop for sipping on their delicious wines. Known for their exceptional Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot, Matanzas Creek also produces limited quantities of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Bordeaux-style reds, with each one more impressive than the last. What makes it even more special is that all of their fruit is grown on sustainably farmed estate vineyards, ensuring the highest quality in every bottle.
It is not just the wines that make Matanzas Creek so memorable, because it is also famous for its spectacular lavender gardens, which add a peaceful, fragrant touch to the entire experience. The tranquil setting, combined with the gorgeous surroundings and exceptional wines, made Matanzas Creek the perfect place to end a full day of wine tastings. It is a serene spot that left us feeling relaxed and content after a day of indulgence.

Martinelli Vineyards & Winery
On our last full day in Sonoma County, we made a stop at Martinelli Vineyards & Winery, and it was the perfect way to cap off our trip. We settled in with a bottle of their rich Syrah, which was the ideal companion to the beautiful surroundings. Spanning over five generations and more than 135 years, Martinelli Vineyards has been committed to farming their estate vineyards with an unwavering focus on quality and a true dedication to their craft. This passion is evident across every part of the winery, from the vineyard to the cellar to the tasting room.
As we sipped on our wine, we could not help but appreciate the history and care that went into every bottle. With 470 acres of producing vineyards to explore, there is no shortage of beauty to take in, whether you’re marveling at the views, learning about the winemaking process, or simply enjoying the tranquil atmosphere. It was the perfect place to reflect on our Sonoma journey and savor the essence of the region.

Hook & Ladder Vineyards & Winery
For our final winery stop, we made our way to Hook & Ladder Vineyards & Winery, where we picked up a bottle of their refreshing sparkling white to enjoy in the beautiful weather. The atmosphere was laid-back and inviting, making it the perfect place to relax and soak up the surroundings.
One of the highlights was discovering that Hook & Ladder has a selection of books for sale, so a couple of us picked up some new titles to bring home. It is a charming touch that adds to the winery’s unique vibe. Another fun surprise was their stage for live music, where they host a monthly concert series. If you are lucky enough to be there during one of the performances, it would definitely worth checking out. Be sure to take a look at their event calendar to see what is happening during your visit!

On our way back from exploring the majestic redwoods at Armstrong Redwoods and savoring sparkling wine at Korbel, we made a spontaneous stop at Fulton Crossing Art Gallery. We loved wandering through the artists’ studios, discovering unique creations, and browsing the charming vintage shops. It was the perfect way to end a day of adventure.

Sonoma offers a charming blend of rich history and stunning landscapes, making it a must-visit destination for history buffs and casual explorers alike. Start your journey at Sonoma Plaza, the largest plaza in California, surrounded by historic adobe buildings, boutique shops, and delightful eateries. Do not miss out on the Mission San Francisco Solano, the last of California’s 21 missions, where you can step back in time and learn about the region’s early days. Just a short stroll away, the Sonoma Barracks offers a glimpse into the town’s military past, while the nearby Vallejo Home transports you to the elegant estate of General Vallejo, one of the most influential historical figures in Californian history. With each site telling its own unique story, Sonoma invites you to wander through its past while savoring its vibrant present.
Where to Eat in in Sonoma California for a Girls Trip
Bird & the Bottle
After a long day of traveling, we could not have picked a better spot for our first meal than Bird & the Bottle. This casual, welcoming eatery offers a unique take on street food, blending flavors from Asia, the American South, the East Coast, Jewish comfort food, and an impressive variety of fresh seafood, which is all brought to life with chef Mark Stark’s signature style.
The restaurant’s name has an interesting backstory, too. ‘A hot bird and a cold bottle’ was once a cheeky phrase describing the late-night pursuits of young men-about-town in New York City just before World War I. The ‘hot bird’ could refer to both a warm dish and a lady of easy virtue, while the ‘cold bottle’ typically meant champagne. The name also pays homage to “The Bottle and the Bird,” an 1889 poem by Eugene Field.
Bird & the Bottle itself is a cozy, vibrant space, featuring an open kitchen, three dining rooms, and two inviting porches. The vibe is perfect for unwinding with one of their signature cocktails or a glass from their thoughtfully curated wine list. We decided to order a mix of small plates to share, and every dish was a hit. Highlights included the Charred Edamame, Fried Cheddar Cheese Curds (sprinkled with dill pickle salt!), and Crispy Chicken Skin Crackling, which totally surprised us by tasting more like General Tso’s chicken.
We also could not resist the Smokey Poke, BBQ’d Bone Marrow, Mac & Cheese topped with crispy kale, and Grilled Asparagus (the sauce was insanely good). Each plate had its own twist, keeping us excited to see what would come out next. It was the perfect spot to kick off our Sonoma adventure with good food, great drinks, and even better company.

Espressioso’s Coffee
On our first morning in Sonoma County, we stumbled upon the most charming coffee shop in Santa Rosa before heading out to the redwoods. Espressioso’s Coffee instantly drew us in with its cozy atmosphere and inviting aroma. What makes this spot even more special is its commitment to quality and community. As a veteran-owned business, Espressioso’s focuses on ethically sourcing coffee beans from smaller family farms, which allows them to take a more dynamic and intuitive approach to roasting and brewing. It is not just about serving a delicious cup of coffee–it is about fostering connections and making a positive impact. By supporting local farmers and reducing their carbon footprint, they are truly brewing with purpose.
We each grabbed a coffee and a baked good to fuel up before our trip to Armstrong. I thoroughly enjoyed my oat milk latte paired with a flaky cheese danish. What made the experience even more unique was that the coffee shop is tucked in the back of a vintage store and a plant shop. We enjoyed wandering through the retail section, where I almost bought a Dolly Parton record that I am already regretting leaving behind. It was such a fun, unexpected start to our day!

The Delicatessen at Korbel Winery
After a morning of exploring the redwoods, we decided to stop by Korbel Winery for a wine tasting and a bite to eat at the Delicatessen. Since we are all big fans of bubbly, the tasting was an absolute blast. We loved sampling a variety of sparkling wines and comparing our favorites before picking the ones to bring back to the house.
Once we wrapped up the tasting, we made our way to the Delicatessen to grab lunch and soak up the sunshine on the patio. The deli menu has something for everyone, featuring an assortment of sandwiches and salads with a few fun twists. While I was eyeing the elevated grilled cheese, I opted for the ‘Korbel Kobb’ salad—a fresh, flavorful Cobb salad topped with crumbled Gorgonzola.
One of the coolest parts? Each menu item comes with a suggested wine pairing, so we got to keep the tasting going while we enjoyed our lunch. Sitting there with great food, delicious wine, and beautiful views was the perfect way to recharge.

Willi’s Wine Bar
Willi’s Wine Bar has been a beloved staple in Sonoma County since 2002—and it is so easy to see why! This cozy spot offers an incredible small plates menu that draws on global flavors, all thoughtfully paired with a carefully curated wine list featuring many local favorites.
We kicked off our evening with a round of classic cocktails, either an Aperol Spritz or a Dirty Martini, before diving into the small plates. The variety was amazing, and we ordered a little bit of everything. Our lineup included Ahi Tuna Tartare, Charred Octopus, Skillet Roasted Shrimp, French Green Bean Salad (my personal favorite!), Local Roasted Artichoke, Roasted Asparagus, and indulgent Roasted Bone Marrow (Glory & I will never turn down bone marrow on a menu).
Every dish was bursting with flavor, and the vibrant, shareable plates made for a perfect dining experience. Willi’s is definitely a must-visit for anyone looking to savor the best of Sonoma’s food and wine scene! I have recommended this place to so many people recently who have upcoming trips to the area. It was definitely my favorite.

Mi Pueblo Santa Rosa
This casual restaurant was just a short walk from our house and turned out to be exactly what we needed after a full day of wine tastings. The laid-back atmosphere and comforting menu hit the spot. I went with a classic chicken quesadilla, which was perfectly cheesy and satisfying, and we all shared a generous serving of queso fundido. It was the perfect way to wind down and recharge after our day of exploring the local wine scene.

John Ash & Co
For Sunday brunch, we treated ourselves to a leisurely meal at John Ash & Co., located at Vintners Resort. The setting was absolutely stunning because it features a picturesque vineyard backdrop that made the experience feel quintessentially Sonoma. Founded in 1980, John Ash is one of the original farm-to-table restaurants in Sonoma County, and the tradition continues today. The culinary team sources fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs from their own culinary gardens—including fig and olive orchards—and partners with over 30 local farms and food producers. Paired with the finest regional wines, every dish feels thoughtfully crafted and rooted in the local landscape.
Our brunch selections did not disappoint! We each ordered something different, from the hearty Vintner’s Burger and fluffy lemon ricotta pancakes to the flavorful Russian River omelet and the Vintner’s Eggs Benedict. I opted for the Caesar salad with roasted salmon, and I am still thinking about that dish because the salmon was cooked to absolute perfection! I have been trying to recreate it at home ever since.
Whether you are seated indoors or on the patio, you are immersed in the beauty of the working vineyard, making it a true wine-country dining experience. After brunch, we grabbed a glass of wine from the bar and wandered around the property, soaking in the peaceful ambiance before heading to one of the nearby wineries. It was the perfect way to start our laid-back Sunday.

Russian River Brewing Company Brewpub
Everyone we talked to insisted that we had to check out Russian River Brewing Company, so for our last meal, we made it happen. And, they were right! This local favorite has an interesting backstory. It was originally founded by Korbel Champagne Cellars in Guerneville, CA, back in 1997. When Korbel decided to step away from the beer business in 2003, they handed over the rights to the Russian River Brewing Company name, along with all the beer names and recipes, to head brewer Vinnie and his wife, Natalie. Since then, it has become a beloved staple in the area, known for its flavorful beers, great wine list, and delicious bar food.
For our meal, we kicked things off with a fresh, flavorful Caprese salad, then shared an order of wings and a classic pepperoni pizza. Everything was spot on and was the perfect comfort food to pair with their craft brews. It was the ideal way to wrap up our time in Sonoma, savoring great food, drinks, and local vibes.

Where to Stay in Sonoma California for a Girls Trip
Inspired by Sonoma Rentals
For our stay, we booked a house through Inspired by Sonoma in downtown Santa Rosa, and it was such a great choice! The location was perfect because it was within walking distance to a variety of great restaurants (we walked to all but the Delicatessen and John Ash & Co.) and just a quick hop onto the highway when we wanted to venture further.
Our host, Kharis, was absolutely wonderful. She went above and beyond to help us plan our trip, offering personalized recommendations and suggestions that went beyond what was listed on her site. She checked in with us regularly to make sure everything was going smoothly and that we had everything we needed. Inspired by Sonoma offers a wide range of rentals throughout Sonoma County, and based on our experience, we would definitely book with them again.
The house itself was charming and cozy—a creatively styled duplex located in historic downtown Santa Rosa. It features two bedrooms, a sunroom with two twin beds, a beautifully remodeled kitchen, a laundry room, and a spacious living room where we loved hanging out. Even with five of us sharing the space, the single bathroom was not an issue at all. Plus, the little touches—like cozy bedding, fresh lemons in the front yard, and thoughtful amenities—made us feel right at home.
Since it is an older home and a duplex, there was a bit of noise at night, but Kharis thoughtfully provided earplugs and fans to help drown it out. It was a small trade-off for being right in the heart of downtown, where we could easily explore some of Santa Rosa’s best restaurants and bars. We loved the balance of character and comfort in this space.

If you are more of a hotel person, the Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa is the place to be! I have had this spot saved for years for whenever I visit with David. It is one of Wine Country’s most iconic resorts, offering the perfect blend of relaxation and luxury.
At the heart of the inn is the Fairmont Spa, which is a 40,000-square-foot oasis set atop an ancient mineral hot spring. Whether you are craving a massage, a steam room session, or a soak in the hydrotherapy pools, this spa has it all. The mineral pool, naturally heated by underground hot springs, is a favorite for unwinding. Plus, the architecture itself is stunning; think old-school grandeur with arched hallways, dramatic staircases, and flower-filled courtyards that reflect the area’s early Spanish influences.
The rooms range from charming and traditional to upgraded suites with fireplaces, balconies, and even clawfoot tubs in some cases. No matter which option you choose, you will feel wrapped in comfort and elegance. Despite being a larger resort, the service is surprisingly personal and welcoming.
Dining at the inn is also a treat. You can savor seasonally inspired dishes at one of the many on-site restaurants, including Santé, known for its delicious California cuisine. And if you are up for some recreation, guests get exclusive access to the Sonoma Golf Club.
Whether you are soaking in the mineral pool, indulging at the spa, or just relaxing in one of the beautiful courtyards, you will feel totally immersed in the best of Sonoma. It is truly a dreamy place to recharge and enjoy everything Wine Country has to offer.
