Last month, I had the opportunity to tour the newest boutique hotel in Raleigh, which is also a stunning historic landmark in Boylan Heights in downtown Raleigh. Not only is it a boutique hotel, it also doubles as a venue and a gathering space. The historic preservation of this building is simply stunning. Keep scrolling to read more about the history and to see more of the beautiful property.
Boutique Hotels in Raleigh, NC: Heights House Hotel Preview

Heights House Hotel was originally commissioned in 1858 as Montford Hall and is one of the last remaining antebellum homes in Raleigh. This home was built by a British architect who was also commissioned to renovate several properties in North Carolina, including the Capitol. After the owner passed in 1899, Montford Hall went through several different owners, renovations, and restorations.
Sarah and Jeff Shepherd acquired this property in 2018 and have worked to renovate and restore the property to create a unique experience, whether you are local to Raleigh and are looking for an event venue or traveling through looking for a creative space to experience our city.
The hotel includes 9 rooms and can sleep up to 20 people. The bridal suite has such immaculate touches, including the shower/tub combination. The communal areas are tastefully decorated, and the natural light shines through beautifully with the 15 foot ceilings. I also love the cupola with the stained glass. If you’re interested, pour yourself a drink and follow along with Sarah and Jeff as they discuss the history, past inhabitants, the architect, and more from their virtual presentation with the NC Museum of History.
I especially adore the outdoor spaces–the double side porches and the fire pit area are gorgeous spaces to enjoy the atmosphere and the views of Boylan Heights. I really appreciate the intentional design details to make this space such a welcoming experience for all guests!
