On one of my first overnight trips to downtown Winston-Salem, I enjoyed a memorable dinner at The Katharine Brasserie & Bar, located inside the beautifully restored Kimpton Cardinal Hotel. Even years later, the restaurant remains one of those places that immediately makes an impression—from the thoughtful spelling of its name to the way the space seamlessly reflects the hotel’s Art Deco roots.

The Katharine is a French brasserie at heart, but with a distinctly Southern sensibility. Housed in the former R.J. Reynolds building, the restaurant balances Parisian inspiration with modern design touches and warm Southern hospitality. It is elegant without feeling stuffy, refined and still welcoming—the kind of place that works just as well for a celebratory dinner as it does for a relaxed night out. The Katharine is aptly named for Katharine Smith Reynolds, the trailblazing wife of R.J. Reynolds, who is remembered for having “broad vision for the present and keen foresight for the future.”
What to Order at The Katharine Brasserie & Bar
The menu offers a smart mix of elevated comfort food and classic brasserie fare, with a clear emphasis on locally sourced ingredients. I opted for the Saturday special—a New York Strip Steak sourced from a farm in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, about 30 minutes from where I grew up in eastern NC. Other standout menu options from previous meals include lobster gnocchi, deviled eggs with caviar, and the trout. Do not miss the burger, either. It is served with pimento cheese, applewood bacon-tomato jam, arugula all on a brioche bun with pomme frîtes.

Their mocktail program is also incredible, which I always appreciate seeing done with intention rather than as an afterthought.
