Last spring, during the stay at home order, I learned valuable lessons about how to keep our spring blooms thriving. Those lessons included not planting too early and that plants need a consistent watering. After success with that, I was even more excited for planting this year and maintaining our spring plants. I teamed up with the experts at Fairview Garden Center to share five spring planting tips! Today, I’m back with our front porch reveal including the plants that we planted from Fairview Garden Center and the style elements we included this year.

Our Front Porch Reveal: Selecting Our Plants

I really appreciated this process of picking out plants that would thrive in our space. I worked with Heather at Fairview Garden Center and prior to picking out plants, she asked me questions about how the sunlight hits our porch. I learned that behind our swing gets consistent afternoon light, the side of the porch gets indirect sunlight for the majority of the day, and the stairs of the porch get late afternoon sunlight.
Having this information really helped with knowing what to put where. There are portion of our porch that get very little sunlight at all, like by our front door.
Our Front Porch Reveal: What We Planted

For the stairs, we planted 4 inch ferns at the base of the stairs, asparagus fern, a specialty begonia, an Endless Summer Blushing Bride hydrangea, an upright fuchsia, a pre-made container, and two impatiens. The pre-made container selections are absolutely beautiful, by the way! I have loved following along with Fairview Garden Center on Instagram for a variety of plant tips and inspiration.
Up by the front door, we planted a blue ice cypress (with the intention of planting this in the ground at a later time) and New Guinea impatiens.
Around the black bench, we planted large ferns, which is a great filler for this area! In front of the rocking chairs, we planted coleus, which is such a bright, beautiful plant.
In the corner near the porch swing, we planted ivy and added a rosemary topiary plant, which is a natural mosquito repellant! Behind the swing, we hung two hanging baskets of bleeding heart vines. And then on the ground by the swing, we planted a confederate jasmine, which smells absolutely amazing.
What I’ve appreciated about all of these plants is that they let me know when they need something, whether its needing a watering or to be moved into the shade.
Our Front Porch Reveal: Decor Items

I have long been a fan of the double front door mat and we use this plaid rug and I just updated the top layer with this door mat. Across the front porch, I’ve added various sizes of these Pottery Barn lanterns and flameless outdoor candles. This bench and these rocking chairs are staples on our front porch. On the bench, we added these pillows for color. In the rocking chairs, I added Sunbrella pillows. Our porch swing was hand built by David and we had a custom made cushion made of a crib mattress and covered in Sunbrella fabric. Then, I added these pillows for the back portion, these for texture, and this for a little pop of color.
Finally, we keep these rugs down under our bench and under the swing, and this round rug under the rocking chairs. We also purchased this ottoman and end table set, which has held up nicely over the past several years.
Fairview Garden Center does have an exceptional selection of home decor items to style your porch as well. Their wreath selection is outstanding and they have great gifts, too!
