Whether you are a small business owner, content creator, or creative entrepreneur, your brand visuals tell your story before you even speak. A thoughtful branding shoot is a powerful way to elevate your presence online, connect with your ideal audience, and communicate what makes you unique. And a successful branding shoot takes more than showing up with a cute outfit—it requires vision, planning, and strategy.
In this post, I am sharing how to plan a branding shoot that feels authentic, looks professional, and aligns with your brand goals.

How to Plan a Branding Shoot: A Step-by-Step Guide for Creative Entrepreneurs
Step 1: Clarify Your Brand Identity

Before you book a photographer or scout locations, take time to define your brand. Your branding photos should visually express who you are and what your business stands for.
Questions to ask yourself:
What are my brand values and personality?
Who is my ideal audience or client?
What colors, moods, and tones best reflect my brand?
How do I want people to feel when they see my content?
If you have a brand mood board or style guide, this is a great time to revisit it.
Pro tip: Pinterest is your friend! Create a board of inspiration for colors, poses, outfits, and locations.
Step 2: Set Clear Goals for the Shoot

Ask yourself: What will I be using these photos for?
Some common goals may include:
Social media content
Email marketing
Product or service launch
Media kits or speaking engagements
Knowing your purpose will shape every detail—from outfits and props to poses and backdrops.
Step 3: Choose the Right Photographer

Not all photographers specialize in branding. Look for someone with experience in personal brand or lifestyle photography who understands how to capture you in a way that aligns with your goals.
Tips for choosing a photographer:
Review their portfolio to ensure their style matches yours
Read client testimonials or ask for referrals
Communicate your goals clearly before booking
Ask if they offer branding shoot packages (some include strategy sessions or content planning support)
If you are local to North Carolina, I cannot recommend Stacey Sprenz enough. While she and I are personal friends, she took the time to review my vision, my existing brand, and we discussed the various components of what I was looking for at the venue that I had picked. It was so smooth and she made me feel right at home in front of the camera, which is not something that I can typically say.
Step 4: Pick the Right Location(s)

Your shoot location should reflect your brand aesthetic. A minimal, modern brand might call for a clean studio space, while a warm, approachable brand may look best in a cozy coffee shop or home setting.
Ideas for locations:
Your office or creative space
Downtown or urban areas
Nature settings (parks, gardens, beaches)
Styled studio rentals or lifestyle spaces
Local businesses that align with your brand
Important Note: Always get permission or secure rentals if needed!
For my rebranding shoot back in 2016, I opted for a historic home as I was transitioning my brand to I’m Fixin’ To from a completely different concept. This year, as an established brand almost 10 years later, I opted for a bit more of a refined space at The Mayton Inn and their on site restaurant, Peck & Plume. For me, this was important because of their nods to North Carolina throughout the decor, the beautiful lighting, and local artists being displayed throughout.
Step 5: Plan Outfits and Props Thoughtfully

What you wear and what you bring to your shoot matter just as much as the location.
Outfit tips:
Choose 2–3 outfits that reflect your brand colors and personality
Avoid busy patterns that distract from your face
Make sure everything fits well and makes you feel confident
Accessorize to add visual interest
Prop ideas:
Tools of your trade (laptop, camera, sketchpad, etc.)
Branded items (mugs, notebooks, packaging)
Personal touches (flowers, books, coffee)
This time around, I coordinated with the kind staff at Peck & Plume for any props I wanted to incorporate (a dirty martini & a cup of coffee). For my big rebrand back in 2016, I wanted to really lean into how excited I was and let that shine through in my outfit, so I went with a gold sequin dress and cowboy boots. This time around, I opted for a black dress and a pair of neutral wedges and statement jewelry.
Step 6: Create a Shot List

Your photographer will appreciate a list of the shots you need. This helps maximize your time and ensures you leave with content that serves your goals.
Sample shot list:
Headshots (smiling, serious, profile)
Working shots (on laptop, writing notes)
Lifestyle shots (walking, sipping coffee, laughing)
Behind-the-scenes moments
Horizontal and vertical versions for different platforms
I created a Pinterest board for my shot list and shared with Stacey in advance so she had an idea of what I was going for, which made the process go even smoother on the day of my shoot.
Step 7: Prep for the Day-of

In the days leading up to your branding shoot, get organized so you can show up feeling your best.
To-do list before your shoot:
Steam/iron your outfits and pack accessories
Organize props and materials
Confirm time, location, and weather with your photographer
Get plenty of rest the night before
Eat something beforehand (and hydrate!)
Consider hair and makeup styling for a polished look
On the day of, I had my hair and make-up done at Moxie in Raleigh’s Ridgewood neighborhood. They were so fun and helped me feel polished, relaxed, and ready for my shoot. They are a great spot for most of your beauty needs!
Step 8: Relax, Be Yourself, and Have Fun

A branding shoot is about showcasing the real you—the passion behind your business and the personality your audience loves. Do not stress about perfection. The more relaxed and authentic you are, the better your photos will turn out. I can say that Stacey really helped me feel confident and comfortable and really encouraged me to lean into some of my quirks and mannerisms. I loved how my photos turned out as a result!
Final Thoughts
Planning a branding shoot may feel overwhelming, but with a little strategy and preparation, it becomes a creative and empowering experience. These photos will help you market your business, build trust with your audience, and stand out in a crowded online space.
