A few weeks ago, David and I headed out for an unofficial Taco Thursday (that’s a thing, right?) at Virgil’s Original Taqueria in downtown Raleigh. It’s located right on Salisbury St. and despite the cold temperatures, has a cute patio, a relaxed atmosphere, and the best chips & queso and tacos. There is a boxwood wall, diverse seating options, and an eclectic, laid-back vibe.
Virgil’s Original Taqueria: a Complete Review
We started out our meal with an appetizer of chips & queso. The chips are flash fried and locally made and are best served with the chili con queso. It’s a huge portion and the best I’ve had in Raleigh!
The drink selection at Virgil’s Original Taqueria is pretty spectacular and I’d recommend asking the server for a recommendation. Check out some of the options here.
I love being able to pick and choose to sample a variety of tacos. I picked the fried avocado, nopales, and a shrimp taco. The Nopales taco has roasted cactus, pico de Gallo, avocado-tomatillo, salsa, and radish. This was my first time trying roasted cactus and it was delicious! The shrimp taco has mojo de ajo, pickled white onions, fresh cabbage, and salsa macha and is packed with flavor, spice, and is one of the best shrimp tacos I’ve had. But hands down my favorite taco was the fried avocado taco with refried black beans, morita mayo, fresh cabbage, and pickled red onions. While I’m not one for refried beans, I am converted to refried black beans.
Virgil’s Original Taqueria is a great spot for date night, and I cannot wait for warmer days to hang out on the patio with chips & queso and fried avocado tacos. Check out the full food menu here. Virgil’s takes reservations and is a fun spot for a larger group, as well. Be sure to check out one of Virgil’s sister properties, Little City Brewing + Provisions.
