7+ Cozy and Romantic Fall Date Night Ideas to Try
Rent a Cabin in the Mountains

Fall is the perfect time to escape to the mountains for peak leaf season. Two of our favorite places to visit are Asheville, Blowing Rock, and the charming surrounding mountain towns, where you’ll find incredible hiking trails, cozy restaurants, and charming downtowns. There are plenty of cabin rentals in the North Carolina mountains that make for the ultimate romantic weekend. Also, check out the historic Mast Farm Inn in Valle Crucis, it is one spot that David and I visit annually.
Dreaming of destinations beyond North Carolina? A cozy fall getaway at Woodstock Inn and Resort in Vermont, High Peaks Resort in Lake Placid, or Portland Harbor Hotel in Maine is always on my wish list.
Visit a Local Farmer’s Market

Fall farmer’s markets are some of the best places to spend a Saturday morning together. They are often decorated for the season and filled with local treats like hot apple cider, pumpkin bread, and fresh apple pie. Roadside stands are equally as fun—especially if you find warm apple cider or boiled peanuts.
If you are in North Carolina, download the Visit NC Farms to discover local markets, farms, and produce stands. It’s also a great tool for planning a spontaneous fall day trip.
Go Apple Picking

Few things feel more “fall” than heading to an orchard for an afternoon of apple picking. Not only is it a fun date, you will also leave with a basket of apples to bake into pies, crisps, or cider. Bonus points if you turn it into a mini road trip to the North Carolina foothills or mountains for the full autumn experience.
Enjoy a Night by the Fire Pit

Cooler evenings mean it is time to cozy up by the fire pit. We love turning on one of our favorite playlists, pouring a glass of wine, and just relaxing under the stars.
And here is a pro tip: leftover Halloween candy makes the best s’mores. Try swapping a traditional chocolate bar for a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup—you will not regret it. Add in a couple of blankets, and it is the ultimate cozy fall date idea.
Go Antiquing

Antiquing is a fun date idea and here are some of my favorite North Carolina antique and thrift shops. We enjoy exploring K n B Marketplace in Fuquay-Varina and Father & Sons in Raleigh, and estate sales can be full of treasures, too. Another favorite? The Raleigh Market at the State Fairgrounds, which reopens once the NC State Fair wraps up. It makes the perfect Saturday date followed by lunch at a local spot.
Visit a Pumpkin Patch & Carve Pumpkins

Heading to a pumpkin patch is a classic fall date idea that never goes out of style. Pick out pumpkins together, snap some cute seasonal photos, and then head home for an evening of pumpkin carving. Light a fall candle, pour a pumpkin spice latte or a warm cup of cider, and turn it into a full-on date night.
Take a Day Trip & Enjoy the Scenery

Fall is one of the best seasons for a spontaneous day trip. Between the colorful leaves, crisp air, and fewer crowds, it is a great excuse to hit the road. Consider roadtrips to these places:
A drive to the NC foothills for a hike or picnic.
A kayaking adventure on one of the state’s lakes or rivers.
A trip to the NC coast, where beaches are beautiful—and way less crowded—this time of year.
If you need inspiration, check out my guides to things to do in Manteo, Wilmington, or consider these romantic North Carolina getaways for couples.
If you’ve been here for a while, you know I’m a big fan of a day trip. This is a wonderful time of year to take a day trip because you get to enjoy the fall colors on the drive. It’s also a great time to get outdoors and enjoy the cooler temperatures. It’s still relatively warm here during the day, so you might consider going out on a kayaking adventure. Or, take a drive to one of the NC beaches. They’re beautiful and way less crowded during this time of year.
Host a Fall Movie Night

Sometimes the best date nights are the simplest. Create an at-home movie night with blankets, popcorn, and your favorite fall drinks. Go lighthearted with a rom-com, or lean into the season with a scary movie marathon. Here is a list of fall movies that are not scary if you are like me and that is more of your vibe. Bonus points if you add themed cocktails or treats inspired by your picks!
Try a New Savory Recipe

Cooking together is such a fun and cozy fall date night at home. Light some candles, pour a glass of wine, and try out a new savory recipe. During 2020, one of our favorites to make was pappardelle bolognese to really lean into the simmering sauce—and it still makes regular appearances in our kitchen.
Not into pasta? Try a hearty chili, roasted tomato soup, or a roasted chicken for an easy yet flavorful option.
Cheer on your Local Sports Team

Nothing says fall like cheering on your favorite football or soccer team. Even if you are not the biggest sports fan, the energy in the stadium (plus the food and drinks) makes for such a fun afternoon or night out.
If you are in the Triangle, consider catching a Carolina Courage game—it is such an exciting way to support women’s sports. Or, bundle up and head to a local college football game for a classic fall date night experience.
Dress Up in Halloween Costumes

Whether you are heading to a party, attending a local event, or just staying in to hand out candy to the neighborhood kids, putting together Halloween costumes is a surprisingly fun date night. Consider a themed couples costume or DIY your own. Add in a night of spooky cocktails and snacks, and you have got yourself a unique way to celebrate Halloween together.
Visit a Haunted House or Ghost Tour

If you are a couple who loves thrills, head to a haunted house or sign up for a local ghost tour. It is a fun way to get out of your comfort zone, and you will definitely have a few laughs (and maybe some jump scares) along the way. This one is an autumn bucket list classic for adventurous couples. Here are some haunted spaces in Raleigh and a really fun option for the Night Watchman Tours at Old Salem in Winston-Salem.
