One of my favorite topics to write about is the charming small towns in eastern North Carolina—and today I am sharing the best things to do in Belhaven NC!

Belhaven is a small town of fewer than 2,000 residents, located right on the Pungo River. The Pungo flows into the Pamlico Sound, which separates the Inner Banks from North Carolina’s Outer Banks. With its waterfront views, fishing, boating, and strong sense of community, Belhaven feels like a hidden gem along the water.

Where to Eat in Belhaven NC

Bistro 1904 at River Forest Manor

River Forest Manor is a historic site right outside of downtown Belhaven that offers a refined dining experience. Known for its elegant setting and creative takes on coastal cuisine, it is a great choice if you are looking for a special meal during your stay. The entire space has been renovated and is truly stunning while Bistro 1904 boasts a fantastic menu of craft cocktails, a great wine list, fresh catches, and views of the river. You may even luck up to catch glimpses of dolphins while you are dining. There is also a beautiful outdoor patio if you enjoy dining outside. Make a reservation.

El Mariachi from Belhaven

If you are craving Mexican food, El Mariachi is a local favorite for its friendly service, hearty portions, and flavorful dishes. It is casual, family-friendly, and a great option if you are looking for something quick and delicious. You may want to consider sharing a dish with your pals, or be prepared to get a box! Start with the chips and queso and do not miss out on their margaritas, either!

The Mad Batter

This cozy bakery and café is perfect for a light lunch or midday pick-me-up. From fresh sandwiches and wraps to homemade pastries and desserts, Mad Batter offers a warm atmosphere and plenty of tasty choices. One of their side options is a freshly baked cookie to help satisfy your sweet tooth. I opted for the chicken bacon ranch sandwich on a wrap and it was an excellent decision.

Spoon River Artworks and Market

This farm-to-fork spot had been on my list for years, and it absolutely lived up to the hype. Spoon River sources as much as possible from North Carolina farms, and the eclectic, art-filled interior sets the tone for a memorable meal. The menu changes frequently, and whatever you order—do not skip dessert. Meals at Spoon River are going to be some of the best meals you will find in eastern North Carolina. I recently enjoyed brunch here, so whether you decide to go for dinner or brunch, you will be delighted.

The Tavern at Jack’s Neck

The Tavern at Jack’s Neck is a nod to the one of the names of Belhaven, Jack’s Neck, and boasts a large menu and nods to North Carolina history throughout the design of the restaurant. Whether you are looking for a casual snack and beverage or are sitting down for surf & turf or homemade pizza, there is something for everyone on this menu.

Shopping in Belhaven

Attic Life

This is a quaint shop offering antiques, gifts, and both men’s and women’s clothing. It is a nice stop for something with a bit of character.

The Backroom Wine Shop

Part wine shop, part boutique, this spot is perfect if you are looking to grab a nice bottle for your stay or pick up a thoughtful gift. It has a relaxed, welcoming vibe and plenty to browse. The wine selection is outstanding and you can grab a glass of wine to sip on while perusing the shop.

Belle and Clover

This boutique is a cozy, curated shop that is full of vintage treasures, unique finds, and cool vibes.There is a great selection of lamps, home decor, accessories, and scents to explore. Plan on spending a bit of time in here treasure hunting.

The Cosy Mermaid

The Cosy Mermaid is a must-stop boutique featuring coastal-inspired gifts, clothing, and home décor. It is a great place to pick up something unique to remember your trip. I picked up a few Christmas gifts and was excited to get a jump start on that this year.

Market 32

Market32 offers a diverse collection of women’s clothing, accessories, home decor pieces, and gift items all at affordable prices. It is definitely worth a stop.

The Refinery

The Refinery is located in the same space as Belle and Clover and offers a beautiful selection of women’s fashion. Their selection of dresses, outerwear, and accessories is incredible.

Riddick & Windley Hardware

This shop was such a fun surprise. More than a traditional hardware store, it has home décor, women’s clothing, wine, and even cheese. It’s a quirky mix that’s perfect for browsing.

Southern Tuck

This boutique has a stylish selection of women’s clothing and accessories, with pieces that work perfectly for both everyday wear and coastal getaways. They also carry my favorite Mary Square pajamas.

Things to Experience in Belhaven

Bad Moms Coffee

Need an afternoon pick-me-up? Stop by Bad Moms Coffee for expertly brewed coffee or specialty drink and a cozy atmosphere. It is a great spot to relax and recharge while exploring Belhaven.

Belhaven Water Front

A stroll along the waterfront is a must, especially at sunset. The views over the Pungo River are breathtaking and make the perfect way to end your evening.

ICW Brewery

ICW Brewery offers craft beer, brewed on site with 3 brewing vats and 16 additional taps featuring 3 wines on tap and the rest are dedicated to NC craft beer, plus soft drinks. Check out their Facebook page for food trucks and local events, such as live music.

Yoga at RiverBend Cultural Arts Center

For a rejuvenating experience, check out yoga classes at the RiverBend Cultural Arts Center. It is a wonderful way to connect with the community, stretch out, and enjoy the calming energy of this waterfront town.

Where to Stay in Belhaven

Between Water and Main Bed & Breakfast

Our stay at this cozy inn was a highlight of the trip. From the welcoming atmosphere to thoughtful touches like cocktail hour and a coffee bar, it is a true retreat. Breakfast is a showstopper—especially if they have the blueberry lemon bread pudding on the menu, which we are still talking about. Owners Kasey and Molly have created something really special here, and it is the perfect base for exploring Belhaven.

While Belhaven may be a small town, its mix of great restaurants, unique shops, waterfront views, and welcoming accommodations make it the perfect stop on an Inner Banks road trip or before catching the Swan Quarter ferry over to Ocracoke.
