As the long, golden days of summer begin to wane, there is still plenty of time to soak up the season in North Carolina before the crisp air of fall arrives. Whether you are clinging to the last long days or eager to shift into a new season, heading into August is the perfect time to balance both — soaking in sunshine while gently preparing for what comes next.

End of Summer Bucket List: 10 Things to Do Before Fall Begins
Plan One Last Getaway

Whether it is a coastal weekend, a mountain retreat, or a quick day trip to a nearby town, squeeze in one last adventure. These mini escapes offer the perfect way to close out the season and refresh before fall routines begin.
Pro-Tip: Keep it stress-free with a pre-packed overnight bag and flexible itinerary.
Host an Outdoor Dinner or Picnic

There is something really lovely about warm evenings and alfresco meals. Gather friends for a backyard dinner party or throw together a low-key picnic at your favorite park. Add string lights, chilled drinks, and your favorite playlist for a dreamy late-summer vibe.
Check Off Your Summer Bucket List

Did you mean to go kayaking? Visit the local farmers’ market more? Try that seasonal recipe you saved back in June? Now is the time! Revisit your summer bucket list and make a plan to check off any last-minute goals before the season fades. One of my bucket list items last year when I wrote this was to try Boatman Spirits Co. in Raleigh’s Seaboard Station — the Mediterranean small plates and house-made gin cocktails did not disappoint, and I was so excited when I crossed it off my list. You can find my monthly summer bucket lists in my monthly edits here.
Catch a Sunset (or Sunrise)

There is no better reminder of summer’s fleeting beauty than a sunrise or sunset. Grab your cocktail (or, if catching a sunrise, your fave coffee) and your camera to take in the colors. Bonus points if you do it somewhere new. I recommend catching a sunset at Mountain Brook Vineyards in Tryon, NC — the terraced outdoor seating overlooking the Blue Ridge foothills is still one of the most beautiful spots in the state to watch the sky change color, glass in hand. Here is a guide to Western North Carolina wineries to visit.
Transition Your Home for Fall

Before pumpkin season is in full swing, start your seasonal planning by slowly introducing cozy textures and warm tones to your space. Think late-summer florals, lightweight throws, and candles with soft, earthy scents like this one for summer and this one for late August or early September.
Declutter Your Summer Gear

Use these last few weeks to sort through beach towels, outdoor gear, and summer clothing. Store what you want to keep and donate or sell anything you did not use. You will thank yourself when next summer rolls around. It is also a good time to replace any rusted beach ware while products are on sale.
Support Local Produce Before the Season Shifts

Peaches, tomatoes, corn, and berries are still in their prime. Visit your local farmers’ market and savor the best of the season before the fall harvest takes over. It is a delicious way to celebrate the end of summer. I also make tomato soup using this recipe to freeze with fresh tomatoes for the fall and winter.
Soak in the Simple Joys

Float in the pool or ocean. Walk barefoot in the grass. Read a book in the sun, just do not forget your sunscreen and hat. Sometimes the best summer memories are made in the quiet, everyday moments. Do not miss the chance to slow down and truly savor them.
Gently Start Your Fall Prep

While we are not rushing into fall, it never hurts to start a little seasonal planning now. Begin thinking about your fall wardrobe, calendar commitments, and seasonal goals. A light planning session now can make the transition into fall feel more intentional and less abrupt. This time of year feels like it goes so much faster once August hits, so I like to be as prepared as possible.
It is also a great time to start planning any landscaping projects, as fall is a great time to plant so roots can establish before winter. Learn more about that here from our landscaping project with Fairview Garden Center.
Capture It All

Take photos. Write a journal entry. Save a pressed flower or shell from your favorite summer spot. Give yourself something tangible to look back on when the cooler months arrive. Admittedly, I used to do a better job of this a few years ago, especially when it comes to pictures and journal entries. I have so many photos on my phone from trips and experiences this year and need to be better about posting them. Consider investing in a small instant camera and creating a photo album to look back on.
Final Thoughts
The end of summer is not something to dread — rather, it is a gentle invitation to reflect, celebrate, and transition with grace. By embracing a few final seasonal activities and preparing thoughtfully for what is ahead, you can close out summer 2026 feeling fulfilled and ready for the beauty of a new season.
