Several years ago, I decided I wanted to explore as much as I could, even if it was just in my city. Since I moved to Raleigh in December of 2008, I have seen this city expand both with its economic presence but also its social presence as well. For that, I am always excited for weekends where DG and I can play tourists. Here are the tips we have on how to play a staycation. I have also included some specific tips for Raleigh.
- Book a hotel reservation at a new or new-to-you hotel in your city (If you are local to Raleigh, try here or here,Durham here, and DG’s hometown of Buffalo here).
- Plan a spa day at your favorite location. I love Lorena Luca (seen here) or the Umstead (here).
- Make a reservation at a restaurant you have been wanting to try. DG and I try to pick restaurants that are walking distance or a short Lyft ride away.
- Be a tourist and do something, well, touristy. In Raleigh, we loved touring the Mordecai House, Oakwood tours are absolutely amazing, and the trolley pub is a must! When DG took me around for my first trip to Buffalo, we did the Maid of the Mist tour, Fort Niagara, and Theodore Roosevelt’s inaugural site, which was DG’s first time doing most of those.
- Make reservations to get dolled up before going out. Parlor is great for hair & makeup, eye lash extensions at Amazing Lash Studio, and a manicure & pedicure from Paintbase would be perfect for getting ready to go out to dinner and a night out.
- Check out an exhibit at a museum, visit the local zoo, or a festival.
- Find a food truck rodeo. You can’t go wrong with the choice of food and the people watching.
- Make a list of places you’d like to go, and create a map to accomplish those spots (Raleigh inspiration posts here and here and one for Durham).
- Turn off the technology and alarms, and sleep in.
- Go shopping for a new outfit to wear. My favorite place to pick up the best and latest fashion is Tanger Outlets and Cameron Village.
What are your favorite things to do on a staycation? DG and I have loved these types of weekends and anniversary celebrations. We are planning our next one in the spring and we hope you’ll consider one, too!
I hope y’all have a happy V(g)alentine’s Day! And happy 7 year dativersary to DG. It seems just like yesterday he was asking me to be his valentine.
