One of my favorite things about visiting is the way it feels like stepping back in time, yet you are never far from good food, local charm, and unexpected gems.
Before it became famous as the hometown of Andy Griffith and the real-life “Mayberry,” Mount Airy was a bustling hub thanks to the granite industry, which gave its nickname of Granite City. In fact, it is home to the largest open-faced granite quarry in the world, still in operation today. Mount Airy even has its own granite named after it, called Mount Airy White Granite. Check out Add in the historic downtown district, filled with buildings from the 19th and early 20th centuries, and you have got a place that feels like a living time capsule.

Located in a historic department store building downtown, the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History (also referred to as the Airy Museum of Regional) showcases the area’s past, from Native American history and early settlers to the granite and tobacco industries. You will find artifacts, interactive exhibits, and rotating collections that celebrate the rich cultural roots of Mount Airy North Carolina.

Attend a Show at the Historic Earle Theatre
Fans of live music, film, and history should visit the Historic Earle Theatre, where live bluegrass, old-time music, and classic movies are regularly featured. It is also home to WPAQ, one of the longest-running live radio shows in the country, second only to the Grand Ole Opry. This theater truly transports you back in time with its vintage marquee and nostalgic atmosphere. It is home to the the Old-Time Music Heritage Hall that is open seven days a week with a goal of preserving, promoting, and protecting Surry County’s music tradition.

Visit Wally’s Service Station

Complete your Mayberry experience with a stop at Wally’s Service Station, a retro gas station turned tourist hub where you can hop aboard a Mayberry squad car tour, browse souvenirs, and grab a root beer float. It is one of the most photographed spots in town and a hit with The Andy Griffith Show fans. I cannot recommend the squad car tour enough! Not only is it a great way to learn more about Andy Griffith, it takes you on a tour of Mount Airy, including the granite quarry. While it is not open for public tours, the North Carolina Granite Corporation Quarry can be viewed from nearby roads and pull-offs. It is an impressive sight and a testament to the industrial history of Mt Airy NC. This massive pit has supplied granite to buildings across the country, including the WWII Memorial in Washington, DC.
Be sure to head inside the shop for unique Mount Airy gifts and souvenirs. After the squad car tour, you can explore a replica of the Mayberry Courthouse and Otis’ jail cell as well as the Darling’s cabin and storefronts resembling downtown Mayberry.

Located right downtown, the Mayberry Antique Mall is a fun stop for collectors and casual browsers alike. The mall features dozens of vendors selling vintage goods, home décor, and collectibles. Whether you are after vintage postcards or just want to get lost in nostalgic treasures, this place delivers. Glory and I scored some really great finds here, including vintage cameras for her collection and some home decor for me. It is a must-visit stop while in town.

Hike Pilot Mountain State Park

Just a short drive from Mount Airy, Pilot Mountain State Park offers stunning vistas, rock climbing, hiking trails, and picnic areas. The views from Little Pinnacle Overlook are breathtaking, especially in the fall. The park is open year-round, but spring and autumn are especially beautiful times to visit.

While Snappy Lunch gets most of the fanfare, locals love the Dairy Center for their old-school menu and classic ground steak sandwich, a Surry County staple. Served up with slaw, mayo, a tomato slice, onion, and a side of fries, it is simple, nostalgic, and absolutely delicious. This casual roadside diner is great for lunch and a peek into local life. Do not leave without getting some seasonal homemade ice cream, either! Head’s up: they are cash only, so be prepared.

Try a Sonker at Miss Angel’s Heavenly Pies

No visit is complete without a sweet treat from Miss Angel’s Heavenly Pies. While they offer plenty of pies and baked goods, their specialty is the sonker—a regional dessert somewhere between a cobbler and a deep-dish pie. Flavors change with the season, and it is best enjoyed with a scoop of ice cream or a drizzle of cream sauce. The blackberry still lives rent-free in my head. If it is tomato season, get one of her tomato pies to take home and thank me later.

Held every September, Mayberry Days is a beloved annual event that brings together fans from across the country. The multi-day festival features parades, musical acts, trivia contests, meet-and-greets with cast members, and plenty of themed fun. If you are a die-hard Andy Griffith Show fan, this is *the* time to visit.
Mayberry Days is in September at several different locations all in walking distance of each other. For 2025, Mayberry Days Festival is September 25, 2025.
