The start of a new year is the perfect opportunity to breathe new life throughout your home. You do not need a full renovation or a big budget to create a refreshed, inspiring space. Even small changes can make a big impact on your mood, productivity, and overall enjoyment of your home. Here are 8 small ways to refresh your home for the new year—room by room and area by area.

8 Small Ways to Refresh Your Home for the New Year
Declutter and Reorganize

A cluttered space can feel heavy and stressful. Start by tidying up the areas you use most: your living room, kitchen, or bedroom. This is also a great way to rediscover items that you may want to use for decor in your house that maybe you had forgotten about.
Donate or sell items you no longer use
Clothing, kitchen gadgets, or décor that no longer sparks joy can find new homes.
Organize storage spaces
Invest in baskets, bins, or drawer organizers to keep things tidy. Organize your closet, too. Here are some of my favorites.
Digital declutter
Unsubscribe from old email lists and organize digital files for a cleaner mental space. I have started deleting photos from my iPhone album from that day while drinking my morning coffee to help clean up my digital space.
Pro Tip: Decluttering is not just practical—it is therapeutic. A simplified home instantly feels fresher.
Refresh with Textiles

Switching out soft furnishings can completely transform the feel of a room without breaking the bank.
Update throw pillows and blankets
New textures or colors can give your sofa, arm chairs, and bedding a fresh look.
Change bedding
A crisp duvet cover or a new sheet set can make your bedroom feel brand-new.
Swap rugs or curtains
Lighter fabrics or seasonal colors can brighten a space and shift the mood.
Add Greenery

Plants are an easy way to refresh any space, boost air quality, and create a calming atmosphere.
Start small
A few potted plants or a small herb garden can be enough to make an impact.
Mix textures
Combine leafy plants with succulents or flowers for visual interest. I love incorporating fresh flowers and mix in artificial flowers throughout our spaces. Some of my favorite artificial stems are these green branches, tulips, cherry blossoms, and hydrangea stems. If you are local, head to Flowers on Broad Street in Fuquay-Varina, NC for an extensive collection.
Indoor maintenance
Regularly trim, water, and dust plants to keep them vibrant.
Pro Tip: Even a small windowsill garden can lift your mood and add life to a room.
Update Your Wall Décor

Changing your walls does not have to mean painting every room—small tweaks can refresh your space instantly.
Rearrange art or photos
Move pieces to different walls or swap frames for a new look.
Add mirrors
Mirrors can make rooms feel larger and reflect light for a brighter atmosphere.
Try removable wallpaper or decals
A patterned accent wall can create a statement without a permanent commitment. See how we updated our foyer with wallpaper here.
Bring in Fresh Scents

Scent has a powerful way of shaping how we feel in our homes.
Reed Diffusers or Pura Diffusers
Lavender, eucalyptus, or citrus instantly refresh a room. We have Pura diffusers in many of our living spaces. My go-to scents are: for our hallways, Illume Citrus Crush, for our primary bedroom, Nest Driftwood & Chamomile and Nest Rose Noir & Oud, and in our kitchen, Nest Amalfi Lemon & Mint and Guy Fox Del Mar.
Candles
Seasonal scents or subtle neutral aromas elevate the atmosphere. Plus, there is nothing cozier than candlelight glow on a chilly winter evening.
Clean regularly
Freshly laundered linens and a quick dusting or vacuuming instantly enhance the home’s vibe. I love the smell of a freshly cleaned home. I also love using our Little Green Machine to freshen up our furniture and pillows.
Make Small Furniture Tweaks

You do not need to buy everything new to refresh your space—sometimes rearranging furniture is enough. If you are in the market for a new piece of furniture, check your local neighborhood Facebook page or Marketplace for some real gems. I also thrift a lot of our furniture. Here are some of my favorite vintage shops in North Carolina.
Try a new layout
Shifting a sofa or moving a bed can change the room’s flow.
Repurpose furniture
Turn an old dresser into a TV console or a bench into a coffee table.
DIY updates
Paint or refinish a piece of furniture to give it new life.
Focus on Lighting

Lighting affects both the look and feel of your home, so find what makes your home feel the best for you.
Swap out bulbs
Choose warmer or brighter lighting depending on the mood you want.
Add lamps or sconces
Layered lighting creates a cozy, inviting atmosphere. We use these flameless candles throughout the home for a light evening glow. I do not love bright, overhead lights, so I much prefer this coupled with lamp light.
Maximize natural light
Clean windows, remove heavy curtains, or add sheer panels to let sunlight in. These are some of my favorite curtains.
Create a Seasonal Vignette

Designate a small area (or two) of your home for a seasonal refresh. I am loving these brass pepper mill and this set of balsamic vinegar and olive oil.
Seasonal décor
Swap out a few décor items each season instead of changing the entire room. We have a Frame TV in our living room, so I love to swap out the art on that TV for the season, too.
Textiles and accents
A small seasonal rug, throw, or centerpiece can create a noticeable change. Bring in color from books. Switch up the look by taking off dust covers, or keeping them on for some added color.
Mood booster
A seasonal vignette gives you something new to enjoy each time you walk by.
Final Thoughts
Refreshing your home for the new year does not have to be overwhelming or expensive. By focusing on small, intentional updates—from decluttering and rearranging to adding textiles, greenery, and light—you can create a space that feels new, organized, and welcoming. These small steps can make your home a happier, healthier, and more inspiring place to start the year.
