There are so many amazing things to do across the state — with some of the best beaches, national parks, forests, mountains, and cities — it truly has something for every kind of traveler. The weather is great here, too! Escape the summer heat and humidity in the mountains and get a perfect beach day in November. Between Water & Main  – Belhaven

One of my favorite hidden gems in eastern North Carolina is Belhaven. This town has a destination-worthy restaurant in Spoon River, and Between Water and Main is a lovely spot to make your home away from home while in town. It is walkable to the restaurant and the town docks.

Blue Juniper Inn – Columbia

Columbia is a sleepy little town along the Scuppernong River, and Blue Juniper Inn is the kind of place that makes a quiet weekend away feel special. It is a peaceful, beautifully appointed spot for couples looking to disconnect, with easy access to the Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge and the Walk on Water boardwalk over the river. It is a wonderful stop if you are exploring North Carolina’s Inner Banks region and want something a little off the beaten path.

The Harvey – New Bern

New Bern has a lot to offer for a weekend getaway and is the perfect spot for incredible dining, shopping, and exploring North Carolina’s history. Located along both the Trent and Neuse Rivers, New Bern is home to the first capital of North Carolina, the birthplace of Pepsi, and over 300 years of rich history. The Harvey is at the top of my list for our next stay in town!

Inner Banks Inn – Edenton

Edenton has been named the South’s prettiest small town and you will quickly see why with the beautiful views of Edenton Bay and the Albemarle Sound, the gorgeous 18th-century homes, and the well-preserved first colonial capital of North Carolina. We quite enjoyed our stay at Inner Banks Inn and their on-site restaurant is outstanding! There are quite a few historical sites to explore, including self-guided, walking tours or take the trolly tour through town.

Lakeview at Fontana – Bryson City

Lakeview at Fontana in Bryson City is one of the loveliest places in North Carolina for a romantic retreat. The property is stunning and includes walking trails, yoga classes, a spa, an outdoor pool, and the crown jewel — a treetop soaking tub in the cabana with a gorgeous view of the river. We celebrated our anniversary here a few summers ago and it was truly delightful.

Mast Farm Inn – Valle Crucis

In November 2021, David and I started an annual tradition of spending a weekend in Valle Crucis at the beautiful, historic Mast Farm Inn — and it is a tradition we still cherish today. It is a weekend I look forward to each year to unwind and unplug at this quaint, charming inn and spend some uninterrupted quality time together. While we opt to stay in the farmhouse, the 19th-century cabins on the property are also available to book.

Manteo is such a charming town and makes for a great weekend getaway or a stopover for a night while driving down the Outer Banks. Tranquil House Inn is a lovely option with ample parking, a beautiful view, and a great location steps from downtown.. The in-house restaurant offers sweeping views of the waterfront and delicious, seasonal options.

Bald Head Island

I absolutely adore Bald Head Island as a getaway spot that feels much further away than it actually is. Cars are not allowed on the island, so you leave your vehicle at the ferry dock on the mainland and take a quick passenger ferry over. The beaches are gorgeous, dining is delicious, and there are plenty of outdoor activities to fill your days.

Carolina Beach

Even though I grew up in North Carolina, I did not take my first trip to Carolina Beach until my mid-30s — and it was during the off-season. There is no convincing me otherwise that fall at the North Carolina beaches is the best time of year. No crowds, most places still open, and mild weather. Carolina Beach has so much to offer: the boardwalk, the park with walking trails, and a great restaurant scene. It is a wonderful spot for families, couples, or a girls’ weekend!

Duck

Duck is one of the most charming towns on the Outer Banks, with a laid-back, yet upscale feel that makes it a favorite for both families and couples. The Duck Boardwalk along the sound is perfect for an evening stroll, and the town is packed with great shopping and dining options within walking distance of the beach. The beaches themselves are quiet and far less crowded than spots further south, making Duck a wonderful home base for an Outer Banks getaway.

Ocracoke Island

My parents started taking an annual vacation to Ocracoke when I was in 5th grade, and it is still my favorite place in all of North Carolina. Ocracoke is only accessible by private boat, plane, or ferry — and that is exactly what makes it special. There are several ferry options, including two short ferries from Hatteras (one passenger-only, one drive-on) and longer ferries from Swan Quarter and Cedar Island.

Ocracoke is the perfect place to unplug for a long weekend or a full week. Be sure to check out the local wild horse herd. If you drive down through Hatteras, consider stops at the Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills and Cape Hatteras Lighthouse to soak in the full Outer Banks experience.

Topsail Island

David and I love heading down to Topsail Island for a beach day trip. The beaches are wonderful, parking is easy, and there are several public beach accesses. We like to grab lunch somewhere local, spend the afternoon on the beach, and head back refreshed.

Wrightsville Beach

While I grew up going to the Outer Banks and Atlantic Beach, Wrightsville became my go-to spot post-college and I have never looked back. The Trailborn Surf & Sound (formerly The Blockade Runner) remains a favorite for its great amenities and sound-and-ocean access location. And honestly, Wrightsville is even better in the off-season — warm, uncrowded, and easygoing.

Asheville

There are never enough good things to say about Asheville. The food scene is incredible, the art scene is incredible, the beer scene is incredible, the shopping scene is incredible. Asheville is home to Biltmore Estate and offers easy access to hiking trails, Pisgah National Forest, and so much more. It is a truly unique city and a must-visit in 2026.

Black Mountain

Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains just 15 miles from Asheville, Black Mountain offers some of the same cool vibes with a small-town, old-school feel. Fantastic dining, breweries, live music, shopping, and hiking trails — it is a fabulous spot for a weekend getaway.

Blowing Rock

Blowing Rock is a quaint and charming little town perfect for a mountain escape. Stroll downtown to browse the local shops, dine at The Speckled Trout, and spend time at Moses H. Cone Park — the largest developed recreation area along the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Burnsville

When I tell you Burnsville surprised me, I mean it completely caught me off guard! There is so much to do: delicious restaurants, gorgeous artwork, rich history, hiking trails, and a prime location for a Blue Ridge Parkway drive during fall foliage season. Burnsville is also home to Mt. Mitchell State Park, the highest peak east of the Mississippi.

Hendersonville

Hendersonville is a charming mountain town with a vibrant Main Street, apple orchards, waterfalls, and easy access to some of the region’s best outdoor adventures. Do not miss out of the Appalachian Pinball Museum, dining at Postero, and visiting some of the wineries in the area. It is the kind of place that earns a return visit every time.

Colonial Inn – Hillsborough

This beautifully renovated inn offers great rooms, excellent amenities, and a perfect location for exploring historic Hillsborough — one of North Carolina’s most underrated towns.

Dynamis Estate Wines – Jonesville

North Carolina wine has come a long way, and no one is doing it better than Dynamis Estate Wines. The property is absolutely gorgeous and the drive up alone is spectacular. Make plans to spend an afternoon here — you will not be disappointed.

Halifax County

Talk about a hidden gem! Halifax County, located right off I-95 near the Virginia border, has quite a bit to offer. Visit Historic Halifax and stay for dinner at Blue Jay Bistro in Littleton, explore Sylvan Heights Bird Park, or walk the Roanoke Canal Trail. There is also a fantastic antique mall if that is more your speed. The Hen and the Hog sadly closed in November of 2025 and was one of my favorite spots in the state.

Horse Shoe Farm – Hendersonville

A couple of years ago, I experienced a wonderful afternoon at The Horse Shoe Farm’s Stable Spa with a 60-minute wellness massage — and completely fell in love with the property and staff. Set on 85 acres of pure serenity with a delicious on-site restaurant, this is a destination worth going out of your way for.

Tryon

Tryon is the birthplace of jazz legend Nina Simone, and a gorgeous mural and park honor her memory in town. The Main Street area features locally owned shops, great food, a wine bar, and a beautifully maintained park. Just outside of town, Mountain Brook Vineyards is worth a visit as well.

Tuxedo Falls – Zirconia

Tucked away in Zirconia, NC, between Hendersonville, Saluda, and Brevard, Tuxedo Falls is an upscale, dog-friendly glamping resort built around five private waterfalls. Guests stay in beautifully appointed tree tents — like the Firefly, complete with an outdoor soaking tub overlooking the mountains — and have access to two miles of private hiking trails, trout-filled streams, a cozy lodge with a full bar, and private fly fishing lessons through Hendersonville Outfitters. It is the kind of place built for doing absolutely nothing, and it is genuinely one of the most special weekend getaways in western North Carolina, especially if you are traveling with dogs.

Washington

I went to undergraduate school at East Carolina University in nearby Greenville, and worked in Washington during that time — falling in love with the town immediately. Great bed & breakfasts, restaurants, a brewery, shopping, and a waterfront that is one of my favorite walks in the state. Do not overlook this one.

Fearrington Village – Pittsboro

One of my absolute favorite places in North Carolina, Fearrington Village is the perfect spot for a girls’ weekend. Shopping, afternoon tea, garden strolls, a pool in warmer months, cocktails on-site, delicious restaurants, and the famous Belted Galloway cows (the Belties!) — it is truly magical.

Heights House – Raleigh

One of the prettiest properties in Raleigh, Heights House Hotel in Boylan Heights is ideal for an evening out with friends, afternoon tea, or even a luxurious staycation. The setting is stunning and the cocktail program does not disappoint.

Pinehurst + Southern Pines

Southern Pines and Pinehurst make for a wonderful girls’ weekend destination. It is a fantastic spot for antiquing and has a great and growing restaurant scene that keeps getting better.

Yadkin Valley Wineries

Surry County and the western North Carolina vineyards make for a perfect road trip with your girlfriends. Explore the Yadkin Valley wine trail, and sneak in some antiquing while you are at it!

Chapel Hill is a quintessential Southern college town with exceptional dining, local breweries, and a gorgeous campus. We have done staycations at the Carolina Inn and highly recommended.

Charlotte

The Queen City offers a fantastic mix of breweries, patios, professional sports, and a booming culinary scene. It is a city that continues to evolve and impress with every visit.

Durham

We absolutely love spending time in Durham — whether for a live show, a Durham Bulls baseball game, a new restaurant, or craft cocktails. It is one of the most dynamic cities in the state right now.

Greensboro

Greensboro is full of history, exceptional restaurants, outdoor activities, and art. David and I always find something new to enjoy on our weekend trips here.

Greenville

I went to college at East Carolina University in Greenville, and it has been wonderful to watch the city evolve — especially the restaurant and cultural scene. Do not miss the BBQ at Sam Jones BBQ while you are there.

Wilmington

It is one of the most well-rounded cities in North Carolina and pairs perfectly with a Wrightsville Beach trip. The riverfront downtown is gorgeous for a morning walk, and the dining and arts scenes have grown tremendously in recent years. Wilmington is also home to three beaches — Wrightsville, Carolina, and Kure — making it one of the most flexible base camps on the NC coast.

Winston-Salem

One of the things I love most about North Carolina is that there is truly no bad time to visit — it just depends on what kind of trip you are after.

Spring (March – May) is beautiful across the entire state. The mountains come alive with wildflowers, and waterfalls are running strong from winter rains and snow. The coast is uncrowded, and temperatures are mild. This is a great time to visit cities like Asheville and Wilmington before the summer crowds arrive.

Summer (June – August) is peak beach season, and the Outer Banks, Wrightsville Beach, and Topsail Island are buzzing. If the heat and humidity of the Piedmont and coast feel like too much, head to the mountains — Blowing Rock, Bryson City, and Burnsville offer a natural escape from summer temps.

Fall (September – November) is arguably the best season in North Carolina, and I firmly stand behind that opinion. The Blue Ridge Parkway is stunning during leaf season (typically peak color mid-October), the beaches are warm enough to enjoy without the summer crowds, and the restaurant and festival scenes are in full swing everywhere from Hendersonville‘s apple country to Ocracoke Island.

Winter (December – February) is underrated. The mountains offer skiing at Beech and Sugar Mountain, the cities are full of holiday events, and the coast is quiet and peaceful — perfect for anyone who loves a moody, off-season beach trip.
